Young Hurlers from Palestine Share Their Struggles and Hope

As violence escalates in Gaza, the plight of Palestinians in the West Bank often receives less attention. Many face daily threats from Israeli forces and settlers, leading to a grim reality marked by fear and displacement. Since the onset of military operations under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in October 2023, the United Nations reports that at least 945 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, with countless others wounded.
Despite these harrowing circumstances, a glimmer of hope shines through the efforts of Palestine GAA, a hurling club established last year that has captivated many young athletes. Although plans for a tour to Ireland this summer were thwarted when the government denied visa requests, the passion for hurling among these children remains unwavering. Several young players have shared their experiences of life under occupation, their love for the sport, and their appreciation for the Irish community’s support.
Life in the West Bank
Khalid, a 16-year-old hurling enthusiast, describes his life in a refugee camp, where he and his family were displaced just seven months ago. “They demolished our homes and bombed our buildings,” he recalls. Despite this trauma, Khalid’s passion for hurling has flourished. “I started watching matches on my phone to learn how to play,” he explains. Under the guidance of his coach, Rachid, Khalid has developed his skills and dreams of playing in Ireland one day. “We must continue playing more to reach Ireland and achieve our dreams,” he emphasizes.
Fifteen-year-old Yousef shares a similar sentiment. He recounts how football was a source of joy until military incursions disrupted their games. “We enjoyed playing, but suddenly we found the army on the street in front of us,” he explains. Despite the chaos, he expresses gratitude for the support of the Irish people, saying, “It is a very heartwarming feeling when I hear people supporting us.”
Another young player, Mo, also 15, dreams of becoming a professional hurley trainer. He reflects on the community’s resilience and their shared love for the sport. “We follow and watch the hurling games,” he notes, while mentioning relatives in the Gaza Strip facing dire conditions. This connection to their culture and sport provides them with a sense of purpose amidst the turmoil.
The Role of Support and Solidarity
Claire Liddy, a GAA officer from County Clare, has been working closely with these young athletes and organizing training camps in Palestine. Her experiences with the children have profoundly impacted her. “What strikes me most is how they carry themselves—with pride, resilience, and a quiet strength,” she observes. Claire highlights the contrast between their joyful spirit and the harsh realities they endure daily.
During her time with the children, she has witnessed their ability to find joy despite facing unimaginable trauma. “To see them dance, to hear them sing so freely—knowing the pain they live with—it broke something in me,” she admits. Claire’s admiration for these young individuals is palpable as she reflects on their circumstances. “It’s infuriating that this is being allowed to happen,” she states, calling attention to the ongoing violence and oppression they face.
The stories of Khalid, Yousef, and Mo are not just tales of hardship; they are also narratives of hope and resilience. As they continue to pursue their passion for hurling, they embody the spirit of their community and the enduring support they receive from around the world. The solidarity with the Irish people remains a source of strength for these young athletes, who aspire to achieve their dreams despite the obstacles in their path.
Their journey, marked by both struggle and determination, serves as a poignant reminder of the human spirit’s ability to persevere in the face of adversity. As global attention remains focused on the ongoing conflict, the voices of these young hurlers highlight the necessity for compassion and understanding in addressing the challenges faced by Palestinians.
