Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for the European Union to play a critical role in peace negotiations regarding the ongoing conflict with Russia. Speaking from Kyiv on March 14, 2024, Zelenskyy emphasized that as the war unfolds in Europe, it is essential for the EU to be involved in discussions facilitated by the United States.

“The war is happening in Europe, and Ukraine is an integral part of Europe — we are already in negotiations on EU accession,” Zelenskyy stated. His remarks followed a phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Zelenskyy’s comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the upcoming days, a development that raises questions about the role of European representatives in these discussions.

The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was not part of the recent call between Trump and European leaders. However, a spokesperson for the Commission noted that she was “extensively debriefed by several EU leaders.” The Kremlin also confirmed the impending meeting between Trump and Putin, which is expected to focus on the conditions for peace.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that following a meeting between Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin, the U.S. now has a clearer understanding of Russia’s potential willingness to end hostilities. Rubio stated, “We now have to compare that to what the Ukrainians and our European allies, but the Ukrainians primarily, of course, are willing to accept.”

In recent developments, Trump has intensified pressure on Russia by imposing a 25 percent tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil, signaling a tough stance that could lead to additional sanctions against Moscow. Ukraine anticipates that Trump will announce further sanctions on Friday. Zelenskyy noted that there are indications of a shift in Russia’s approach, saying, “Russia now seems to be more inclined toward a ceasefire.”

Despite these signs of progress, Zelenskyy cautioned against potential deception, stressing the importance of transparency in negotiations. “The key is to ensure they don’t deceive anyone in the details — neither us nor the United States,” he remarked during his evening address on March 13, 2024.

Zelenskyy is keen on aligning positions with European partners prior to the high-level meetings. He expressed confidence in Ukraine’s readiness for dialogue, stating, “Ukraine is not afraid of meetings and expects the same brave approach from the Russian side.” His call to action reflects a determined effort to bring an end to the conflict.

As the situation evolves, the involvement of the European Union in these discussions may be pivotal. Zelenskyy concluded his remarks by thanking those who continue to support Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and peace, emphasizing that it is time to bring the war to an end.
