Construction has officially commenced on the highly anticipated North Atlantic DNA Museum in Derry, marking a significant milestone for the region. The project, estimated to cost £15 million, aims to showcase a rich array of artefacts that capture the history of the North West of Ireland.
A Cultural Landmark in Ebrington Square
Located in Ebrington Square, the DNA Museum is envisioned as a vibrant cultural hub that will not only enhance the local visitor experience but also promote the rich heritage of the area. The project is expected to create 14 jobs, providing a boost to the local economy.
The appointed contractor, McKelvey Construction Ltd., began work on-site this week. As the construction progresses, the museum is projected to become a vital part of the Derry and Strabane City Deal Plan, which aims to foster economic growth and cultural development in the region.
Community Support and Strategic Importance
Councillor Ruairi McHugh, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, expressed enthusiasm about the project. He emphasized that the museum represents a major strategic initiative for the local community, stating, “This museum will be a significant cultural asset that enhances the visitor experience and celebrates the history and heritage of the North West.”
As the construction of the DNA Museum unfolds, it is anticipated to attract both local residents and tourists, contributing to the cultural landscape of Derry. The project underscores a commitment to preserving and promoting the historical narratives that define the area.
With its construction now underway, the North Atlantic DNA Museum is poised to become a landmark attraction, enriching the cultural fabric of Derry and serving as a testament to the city’s commitment to celebrating its unique history.
