Google Unveils Ireland’s Top Searches for 2025, Reflecting National Interests
Google has released its annual “Year in Search” report for 2025, highlighting the most searched topics in Ireland over the past year. This year’s data reveals a nation captivated by weather events, sports, political queries, and unexpected trends that sparked widespread interest.
Weather and Political Curiosities Dominate Searches
The most searched term in Ireland this year was Storm Éowyn, which struck the country in January. Named after a character from The Lord of the Rings, the storm generated significant public interest, though many struggled with its pronunciation. In fact, the query “How to pronounce Éowyn” secured the third spot on the list of “How to” questions searched on Google.
Political topics also gained traction, particularly surrounding the presidential election. The search term “How to spoil your vote in Ireland” ranked second among the “How to” queries, while “How to register to vote in Ireland” placed fifth. These findings reflect a heightened engagement with the electoral process among the Irish public.
Catherine Connolly emerged as the most searched person of the year, followed by Maria Steen and Jim Gavin in second and third place, respectively. Other notable mentions include Belle Gibson, an Australian influencer involved in a fraud scandal, and DJ Carey, who made headlines following a conviction related to false cancer claims.
Entertainment and Sports Lead the Way
In entertainment, the most popular movies included titles like Nosferatu, Happy Gilmore 2, and The Minecraft Movie. The top series searched encompassed a variety of genres, with “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” and “Traitors Ireland” among the frontrunners.
Sports searches were dominated by events such as the Ryder Cup and the Champions League, with the Ryder Cup ranking as the second most searched term overall. The Six Nations clash between Ireland and France also drew significant interest.
The data reflects a broader trend in Irish society, where both weather phenomena and local sporting events capture the public’s imagination. As Google continues to provide insights into the collective interests of nations, the “Year in Search” report serves as a snapshot of cultural priorities and concerns.
