Kilkenny Science Festival Launches Exciting Events for Science Week 2025
The Kilkenny Science Festival 2025 will feature a diverse lineup of events from November 9 to 16, coinciding with the nationwide celebration of Science Week. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Science Week, which emphasizes the importance of scientific inquiry and collaboration in advancing science across Ireland. The theme for this milestone event is “Then. Today. Tomorrow,” inviting participants to explore how science has shaped modern life while considering future challenges and possibilities.
The festival will host over five events designed to engage participants of all ages, fostering curiosity and creativity. Activities will include hands-on workshops that merge art, science, and history, providing a unique opportunity for community engagement and education.
Highlighted Events in Kilkenny
One of the standout events, “Pigment Experiments and Paper Creations – the Red Book of Ossory Zine,” will take place on Saturday, November 15, from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. This workshop, led by artist Mary Conroy, will allow participants to recreate the ancient craft of pigment-making. Using natural materials, attendees will create inks and colors inspired by the medieval Red Book of Ossory, blending heritage with chemistry through creative experimentation.
Another engaging opportunity is “Microscopic Worlds: A Photography Workshop” on the same day from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Evans Home in Kilkenny. Biologist and photographer Tasneem Khan will guide participants in using microscopes and cameras to explore the hidden beauty of nature, showcasing how science and art can intertwine to produce captivating imagery.
The festival will also feature “Fossils to the Future,” aimed at families and scheduled for Sunday, November 9, from 2:30 PM to 4 PM at The Estate Yard, Ardra, Kilkenny. This outdoor workshop encourages children to envision life from the age of fossils to future ecosystems, integrating environmental awareness with artistic expression.
Government Support and Community Impact
The significance of Science Week is underscored by the announcement from James Lawless TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. He revealed a funding allocation of €847,820 to support 14 festivals and numerous events throughout Ireland.
“Science Week is now a key event across Ireland, connecting people with science through engaging activities,” Minister Lawless stated. “I am delighted to announce my department’s support for this year’s program, which includes funding for 36 projects. Science shapes every minute of our daily lives, and this year’s theme encourages us to reflect on our progress while enjoying the experiences offered.”
In addition, Dr. Ruth Freeman, Director of Science for Society at Research Ireland, commented on the significance of this anniversary. “For 30 years, Science Week has been sparking curiosity and bringing people together through science. Our theme of ‘Then. Today. Tomorrow.’ celebrates past achievements while considering future possibilities. We appreciate the creativity and dedication of local organizers and volunteers who make Science Week a vibrant nationwide celebration.”
