The Limerick Festival of Science will receive €50,000 in funding to support activities during Science Week 2025, which runs from November 7 to November 17. This financial backing is part of a national initiative aimed at enhancing public engagement with science and technology. The festival seeks to “unlock new possibilities by stimulating curiosity and fostering dialogue” between the public and experts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Minister for Further and Higher Education, James Lawless TD, announced a total of €847,820 in funding for 36 projects across Ireland as part of this year’s Science Week, which marks its 30th anniversary. During the funding announcement, Minister Lawless emphasized the significance of Science Week in connecting individuals with scientific endeavors through interactive and engaging activities.

Celebrating Science and Community Engagement

“Science shapes every minute of our daily lives,” Minister Lawless stated. He highlighted the importance of science in various fields, from environmental protection to advancements in healthcare and technology. The theme for this year’s events, “Then. Today. Tomorrow.,” encourages participants to reflect on historical achievements while contemplating future innovations. Minister Lawless urged the public to participate in events happening nationwide throughout Science Week.

Dr. Ruth Freeman, Director of Research for Society at Research Ireland, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming Science Week. “For 30 years, Science Week has been sparking curiosity and bringing people together through science,” she noted. Dr. Freeman emphasized the anniversary theme as an opportunity to celebrate past contributions to science while considering future possibilities for individuals and communities.

She also recognized the efforts of local organizers and volunteers, attributing the success of Science Week to their creativity and dedication. “I want to sincerely thank them for making Science Week such a vibrant, nationwide celebration,” Dr. Freeman added.

This year’s Limerick Festival of Science, among other events, promises to explore topics of societal importance, showcasing how STEM influences everyday life. With funding secured, organizers are preparing an array of activities designed to engage diverse audiences and inspire curiosity about the scientific world.

As Science Week approaches, the anticipation builds for a celebration of knowledge, discovery, and community engagement, reaffirming the vital role that science plays in shaping a better future for all.
