The Limerick Festival of Science will receive €50,000 in government funding as part of a nationwide initiative to support projects during Science Week 2025. This funding aims to enhance public engagement with science by stimulating curiosity and fostering dialogue between the community and STEM experts. The festival is scheduled to take place from November 7 to November 17, 2025.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, James Lawless TD, announced a total of €847,820 in funding for various projects across Ireland during this year’s Science Week, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary. In his remarks at the launch, Minister Lawless highlighted the significance of Science Week, stating, “Science shapes every minute of our daily lives, from protecting the environment to driving healthcare and technological innovation, and so much more besides.”

Engaging the Public with Science

The theme for this year’s Science Week, “Then. Today. Tomorrow.,” encourages reflection on past achievements and future possibilities in the field of science. Minister Lawless expressed his enthusiasm for the program, saying, “I encourage everyone to get involved and attend one of the many events happening around the country this Science Week.”

The festival aims to explore topics of societal importance, showcasing how STEM impacts everyday life. According to Dr. Ruth Freeman, director of research for society at Research Ireland, Science Week has been a catalyst for curiosity and community engagement for three decades. She noted, “Our anniversary theme is a chance to celebrate the endeavours of yesteryear that have brought us to where we are today, and to consider what may lie ahead for individuals, families, communities, Ireland, and the entire planet.”

Support from Local Organizers

Dr. Freeman also acknowledged the vital role of local organizers and volunteers in making Science Week a successful and vibrant celebration. She stated, “The success and appeal of Science Week is due primarily to the creativity and tireless work of local organisers and volunteers.”

As the festival approaches, anticipation builds around the diverse range of events planned across Ireland. With a focus on accessible and engaging activities, the Limerick Festival of Science is set to contribute significantly to this nationwide celebration of science.
