Limerick Festival of Science Secures €50,000 in Government Funding

The Limerick Festival of Science has been awarded €50,000 as part of a broader funding initiative to support activities during Science Week 2025. The festival, scheduled to take place from November 7 to November 17, 2025, aims to “unlock new possibilities by stimulating curiosity and fostering dialogue” between the public and experts in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
In a nationwide announcement, James Lawless TD, the Minister for Further and Higher Education, revealed a total of €847,820 in funding allocated for this year’s Science Week, which marks its 30th anniversary. During the launch, Minister Lawless emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “Science Week is now a key event across Ireland, connecting people with science through engaging activities.”
James Lawless highlighted the diverse ways in which science impacts daily life, from environmental protection to advancements in healthcare and technology. This year’s theme, “Then. Today. Tomorrow.”, encourages reflection on past achievements and future possibilities while inviting the public to participate in various events throughout the country.
Celebrating Three Decades of Science Engagement
Dr. Ruth Freeman, director of research for society at Research Ireland, welcomed the launch of Science Week 2025. She noted that for thirty years, the event has sparked curiosity and fostered community connections through science. Dr. Freeman stated, “Our anniversary theme of ‘Then. Today. Tomorrow.’ is a chance to both celebrate the endeavours of yesteryear that have brought us to where we are today and to consider what may lie ahead for individuals, families, communities, Ireland, and the entire planet.”
She expressed gratitude for the local organizers and volunteers who contribute to the festival’s success, saying, “The success and appeal of Science Week is due primarily to the creativity and tireless work of local organisers and volunteers. I want to sincerely thank them for making Science Week such a vibrant, nationwide celebration.”
The Limerick Festival of Science is poised to engage attendees with a variety of activities that address important societal topics. The funding will help ensure that these initiatives can reach a broad audience, promoting a greater understanding of the essential role that STEM plays in everyday life and future advancements.
As excitement builds for this year’s Science Week, communities across Ireland are encouraged to participate in the events, which aim to make science accessible and enjoyable for all.
