Thousands Attend Galway Science and Technology Festival 2025
Thousands of science enthusiasts gathered at the University of Galway on November 5, 2025, for the launch of the 28th annual Galway Science and Technology Festival. The event showcased a full day of discovery, engaging activities, and hands-on learning, celebrating the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Approximately 15,000 attendees from surrounding areas, including Galway, Roscommon, Mayo, and Clare, attended the festival. Participants enjoyed an array of experiences, featuring 25 live shows and workshops, along with over 100 interactive stands presented by local, national, and multinational organizations.
Highlights of the Festival
Among the many exhibits were the newly-designed Medtronic Experience and the Medtronic Mystery Experience, alongside the University of Galway’s presentation, “Explore the Wonders of Science.” Attendees were immersed in a dynamic environment that encouraged curiosity and innovation.
Another highlight of the festival was the presentation of the Galway Science Person of the Year Award to renowned zoologist Dr. Michel Dugon, the founder of the Venom Lab at the University of Galway. For over 14 years, Dr. Dugon has been a pivotal figure at the festival, captivating children and students with his live workshops focused on bugs, spiders, and snakes.
Dr. Dugon’s commitment to engaging the public in scientific research has made him a long-time favorite among families and school groups, making science accessible and exciting for all ages.
Innovation and Inspiration
During the festival, Ronan Rogers, Senior R&D Director at Medtronic, highlighted the alignment of his company’s mission with the festival’s ethos. “At Medtronic, our story is one of continuous innovation,” he stated. “From developing the world’s first leadless pacemaker to breakthroughs in robotics and minimally invasive therapies, science never stands still.”
“The Galway Science and Technology Festival reminds us that every breakthrough starts with curiosity, and the next one could come from right here in Galway,” Rogers added.
Professor Becky Whay, Deputy President and Registrar of the University of Galway, expressed pride in the university’s role as the lead academic partner for the festival. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to inspiring curiosity and innovation in STEM and showing how these fields connect to real-world impact,” she said.
Professor Whay also congratulated Dr. Dugon on his award, calling it a fitting recognition of his passion for engaging and inspiring others through science.
The festival underscored the importance of STEM education and the curiosity that drives scientific inquiry. It provided families with the opportunity to interact directly with scientists, engineers, and innovators, further encouraging young attendees to consider future careers in these vital fields.
As the festival concluded, it left a lasting impression on attendees, reaffirming the role of curiosity and innovation in shaping the future of science and technology.
