Last Sunday, the 28th annual Galway Science and Technology Festival commenced at the University of Galway, drawing a remarkable 15,000 attendees from Galway and surrounding areas, including Roscommon, Mayo, and Clare. The festival celebrated the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through a full day of engaging activities, workshops, and live shows.

Festival-goers enjoyed a wide array of experiences, featuring 25 live shows and workshops alongside over 100 interactive stands presented by local, national, and multinational organizations. Highlights included the newly-designed Medtronic Experience and the Medtronic Mystery Experience, as well as the University of Galway’s exhibition titled Explore the Wonders of Science.

Recognizing Excellence in Science

During the event, Dr. Michel Dugon, a renowned zoologist and founder of the Venom Lab at the University of Galway, received the prestigious Galway Science Person of the Year Award. Dr. Dugon has dedicated over 14 years to inspiring children and students through his engaging workshops on various creatures, including bugs, spiders, and snakes, while also conducting significant scientific research.

His contributions have made science accessible and exciting, particularly for school groups and families attending the festival. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Dugon emphasized the importance of fostering curiosity in young minds, stating, “The joy of discovery is what drives scientific advancement.”

Innovation and Collaboration at the Heart of the Festival

Ronan Rogers, Senior R&D Director at Medtronic, shared insights on the company’s ethos during the festival. He highlighted their commitment to continuous innovation, citing breakthroughs such as the world’s first leadless pacemaker and advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence. “Science never stands still,” Rogers remarked. He added, “The Galway Science and Technology Festival reminds us that every breakthrough starts with curiosity, and the next one could come from right here in Galway.”

Professor Becky Whay, Deputy President and Registrar at the University of Galway, expressed pride in the institution’s role as the lead academic partner for the festival. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to inspiring curiosity and innovation in STEM,” she noted. “Congratulations to Dr. Dugon on this well-deserved recognition for his passion in engaging and inspiring others through science.”

The festival underscored the essential role of STEM education and encouraged young attendees to explore future careers in these fields. Families had the unique opportunity to interact directly with scientists, engineers, and innovators, fostering a deeper appreciation for science and technology.

As the day concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of wonder and curiosity about the scientific world, setting the stage for future generations to pursue careers in STEM fields. The festival not only celebrated existing achievements but also inspired the next wave of innovators and thinkers.

A lively atmosphere filled the University of Galway, with attendees engaging in hands-on learning experiences, including a special appearance by Blue, the dinosaur from the Jurassic Park Experience, captivating science fans of all ages.
