Atletico Madrid Secures 2-0 Victory Over Real Betis with Key Goals
Atletico Madrid achieved a convincing 2-0 victory against Real Betis on January 8, 2024, at La Cartuja stadium. This win allowed Atletico to ascend to fourth place in La Liga, providing a much-needed recovery after their recent 4-0 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League.
The match marked a significant turnaround for Diego Simeone’s squad, who had struggled defensively in their past outings. They managed to secure only their second clean sheet in the last nine matches across all competitions and recorded their first away victory of the season.
Giuliano Simeone, the son of the Atletico head coach, opened the scoring early with a precise volley from the edge of the box. Shortly before halftime, summer signing Alex Baena, who joined for €50 million, added the second goal, marking his first for the club.
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, saying to Movistar, “This is an important win, hard-fought, and I’m happy. I hope we continue like this, away from home, not just at home… it was a great game from the whole team and a big effort.”
Despite Atletico’s dominance in the first half, Real Betis came out stronger after the break. They hit the crossbar with a free-kick from Abde Ezzalzouli but were unable to find the back of the net. Atletico’s solid defensive display kept Betis at bay, ensuring that the visitors maintained their lead throughout the second half.
Giuliano Simeone dedicated his goal to his recently born nephew, Faustino, celebrating by forming the letter “F” with his fingers. This moment marked a personal milestone for coach Diego Simeone, who became a grandfather with Faustino’s birth. In a light-hearted moment, he congratulated his son on his performance, stating, “Nothing changes for me,” while smiling.
With this win, Atletico Madrid trails La Liga leaders Real Madrid by eight points. Notably, they remain the only team to have defeated their city rivals this season.
Real Betis, now in sixth place, find themselves three points behind Atletico. Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso reflected on the match, saying, “Today we were lacking in the final third; we had to be a little sharper in front of goal.” He praised the fans who filled the stadium on a rainy Monday, emphasizing their unwavering support. “We have to turn the page and continue,” he added, acknowledging the need for improvement in upcoming matches.
As Atletico Madrid looks to build on this momentum, they will aim to sustain their performance in La Liga and recover from their recent setbacks in European competition.
