Barry McGuigan Leads Tributes to Boxing Legend Joe Bugner

Barry McGuigan has expressed his condolences following the death of legendary boxer Joe Bugner, who passed away on October 30, 2023, at the age of 75. The boxing community is mourning the loss of a former heavyweight champion known for his bouts with some of the sport’s greatest figures, including Muhammad Ali.
Bugner achieved worldwide fame after securing the British, European, and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. He famously fought Ali twice, once in 1973 in Las Vegas and again in 1975 in Kuala Lumpur, though he lost both matches on unanimous points decisions. His career record stands at 69 wins, with 41 coming by knockout, alongside 13 losses and one draw.
Tributes Pour In from the Boxing World
Posting on social media, McGuigan remarked, “Very sorry to hear the sad news about Joe Bugner. He had an outstanding career and fought some of the greatest boxers in heavyweight history. RIP Joe.” The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed Bugner’s passing, stating, “It is with great sadness that the former British, European, Commonwealth heavyweight champion and world championship contender Joe Bugner has passed away at his care home in Brisbane, Australia. The British Boxing Board of Control passes on its condolences to Joe’s family.”
Bugner’s illustrious career began with his victory over Henry Cooper in 1971, where he won the British, European, and Commonwealth titles by points. Although he lost his titles later that year to Jack Bodell, Bugner retained the European heavyweight title just months later against Jurgen Blin.
His encounters with boxing legends extended beyond Ali. Shortly after his first defeat to Ali, Bugner faced Joe Frazier at Earls Court in London, adding to his legacy of competing against elite opponents.
A Life Beyond the Ring
After retiring from boxing, Bugner explored various ventures, including running a vineyard in Australia and taking on roles in film. He advised Russell Crowe on the boxing film Cinderella Man. Bugner also appeared on the reality show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here in 2009, where he exited after 16 days, following a bushtucker trial defeat.
Numerous figures from the boxing world have shared their memories of Bugner. Prominent promoter Frank Warren described him as “a great man who will be missed,” recalling Bugner’s participation in one of Warren’s early fights on ITV. Former champion Frank Bruno also paid his respects, noting, “He had a long career and fought many great heavyweights including Muhammad Ali twice, Joe Frazier, and Henry Cooper. Sad day for boxing.”
As tributes continue to pour in, Bugner’s legacy as a formidable heavyweight champion and a beloved figure in boxing history remains firmly etched in the sport. His impact on the ring and beyond will not be forgotten.
