Brendan Rodgers Urges Celtic to Strengthen Squad After Ajax Loss

Celtic’s manager, Brendan Rodgers, has called for increased ambition in the transfer market following a significant pre-season defeat to Ajax. The team faced a challenging match in Como, where they suffered a heavy 5-1 loss after a promising start. Despite the disappointing outcome, Rodgers remains composed and focused on enhancing the squad as preparations continue for the upcoming season.
In the match against Ajax, Celtic initially showcased a solid performance during the first half, demonstrating good football and physicality. However, the second half revealed weaknesses, leading to a collapse that saw the team concede four goals. Reflecting on the game, Rodgers stated, “The scoreline didn’t quite reflect the game… We played a lot of really good football with physicality… but the last 30 minutes, we would want to be better.”
The manager acknowledged the need for improvements as the team seeks to push forward. He emphasized, “If your ambition is to really progress… then we need to improve the squad.” While he praised the players’ hard work and commitment, he highlighted that bringing in new talent is essential for future success.
Rodgers noted that new signing Shin Yamada was unable to make his debut due to administrative issues regarding his international clearance. Initially set to be among the substitutes, Yamada’s participation was halted when the club was informed late that he was not registered to play. “We hope he’ll be okay for Saturday,” Rodgers said, indicating optimism for Yamada’s involvement in the upcoming match against Al Ahli.
The match against Ajax also featured a standout performance from winger Yang Hyun-jun, who scored Celtic’s only goal. Amid speculation linking Yang to a loan move to Norwich City, Rodgers firmly stated that he views the player as a vital part of the squad. “I see Yang as an important member of our squad… At this moment in time, he’s a starting winger for us,” he affirmed.
Rodgers’ comments reflect a broader strategy as Celtic aims to strengthen its roster ahead of the new season. With the transfer window open, the manager’s focus on bolstering the squad indicates a commitment to maintaining competitiveness in both domestic and European competitions.
As Celtic transitions into the next phase of their pre-season, the emphasis on quality signings and player development remains paramount. The team looks to build on the lessons learned from the Ajax match and prepare for future challenges, with a strong squad being crucial for their ambitions moving forward.
