Charlie Smyth Earns Starting Role with Saints After NFL Debut
Charlie Smyth is set to continue as the starting kicker for the New Orleans Saints following a standout performance in his NFL debut. Head Coach Kellen Moore confirmed that Smyth will retain his first-choice position as the team prepares to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
During a press conference, Moore expressed confidence in Smyth’s abilities, stating, “Yeah, we’ll go with Charlie. He did an excellent job last week, and we’re in an excellent development stage with both these guys [Smyth and Cade York].” This endorsement comes after Smyth successfully executed a 56-yard field goal in his first attempt during the Saints’ recent game against the Miami Dolphins.
Despite the Saints suffering a narrow defeat, 21-17, Smyth’s performance included an onside kick that allowed his team to regain possession. The 24-year-old kicker has been with the Saints for nearly two years, serving as a backup to Blake Grupe, who was recently released after converting 18 out of 26 field goal attempts this season.
Smyth’s journey to the active roster began with a competitive tryout where he outperformed York, who was later added to the Saints’ practice squad. The young kicker, who previously excelled in the Ulster U20 Championship and was a runner-up in the Tailteann Cup, is eager to build on his initial success in the league.
With his confidence bolstered by a solid debut, Smyth aims to prove himself further as he steps onto the field this weekend. The Saints, currently with a record of 2-10 for the season, will look to turn their fortunes around with Smyth leading the kicking team. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this rookie continues to develop in such a competitive environment.
