Charlie Smyth to Make NFL Debut as Saints Face Dolphins
Charlie Smyth has been elevated to the active roster of the New Orleans Saints and is set to make his first NFL start on March 15, 2024, against the Miami Dolphins. The 24-year-old kicker has spent nearly two years with the Saints, primarily serving as a backup to Blake Grupe, who was recently released after a disappointing performance in the first 11 games of the season.
The decision to start Smyth comes after Grupe converted only 18 of 26 field-goal attempts, prompting the Saints to evaluate their kicking options. In response, the team brought in veteran kicker Justin Tucker, a seven-time Pro Bowler who had recently completed a 10-game suspension, along with Cade York, a former fourth-round draft pick. Following their workouts, York made a stronger impression on the Saints’ coaching staff and was subsequently signed to the practice squad.
In a surprising turn of events, Smyth outperformed York in a kicking competition, earning his spot on the Saints’ first team for their upcoming matchup in Florida. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as Smyth will become the first player to transition directly from Gaelic games to an NFL starting position without first playing college football.
Path to the NFL
Smyth’s journey to the NFL is marked by his success in Gaelic football, where he was a winner of the Ulster U20 Championship and a runner-up in the Tailteann Cup with the Down team. His kicking abilities have been on display during preseason games, where he notably kicked the winning field goal against the Arizona Cardinals in 2023. This summer, he maintained an impressive track record, achieving a 100% success rate during the second halves of the Saints’ three warm-up fixtures.
The Saints’ coaching staff has expressed confidence in Smyth’s abilities, highlighting his performance in practice and games as key factors in their decision to elevate him. As he prepares for his debut, Smyth aims to make a significant impact and prove that his transition from Gaelic football to American football can be successful.
With the Saints facing the Dolphins, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Smyth handles the pressure of his first NFL start. His story serves as an inspiring example of determination and adaptability in the world of professional sports.
