Chiefs Struggle as Mahomes Takes on Managerial Role in 0-2 Start

The Kansas City Chiefs have opened the 2023 NFL season with an unexpected 0-2 record, marking the first time since 2014 that they have started a season without a win. This also represents a significant moment for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is experiencing his first 0-2 start in his professional career. Analysts are questioning the effectiveness of the Chiefs’ offense and whether they are witnessing the decline of one of the league’s most successful franchises.

On the latest episode of the Inside The Huddle Podcast, Sky Sports analysts Neil Reynolds and Phoebe Schecter examined the challenges facing the Chiefs. They emphasized that the team’s struggles are primarily due to a lack of offensive weapons available to Mahomes. “They’ve turned Mahomes into the biggest, most famous and most expensive ‘game manager’ ever,” Reynolds stated. He noted that the quarterback is forced to rely on short passes and scrambling due to insufficient support from his teammates.

The Chiefs’ offense has not seen a 1,000-yard receiver since Tyreek Hill departed for the Miami Dolphins in 2021. Reynolds pointed out that the absence of injured players like Xavier Worthy and the suspension of Rashee Rice have exacerbated the situation. “If we took the names off the back of the jerseys, you’d be impressed with the quarterback, but you’d be like, ‘I don’t believe in that team,'” he added.

Assessing the Current Roster

The Chiefs’ recent performances have raised concerns about their ability to succeed this season. Although they have reached the Super Bowl in five of the last six years and secured three titles, the current roster lacks the depth and talent seen in previous seasons. Schecter noted that Mahomes is currently the only reliable option on the field. “You honestly look at this team and think, ‘who do we go to?'” she remarked.

The Chiefs’ star tight end, Travis Kelce, has also struggled, as seen in their latest loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Kelce’s performance included an uncharacteristic interception in the red zone, further highlighting the team’s offensive struggles. Schecter expressed concern about the creative potential of the offense, stating, “Normally Andy Reid is so creative, but I don’t trust anybody on that offense right now, apart from Mahomes, to be creative and to make something happen.”

With the trade deadline approaching on November 4, 2023, speculation has arisen about the possibility of bringing back Hill to reinvigorate the offense. Schecter suggested that Hill, who has publicly stated his desire to be on a winning team, could be a valuable addition if the Chiefs can negotiate a deal. “I think Tyreek would be up for that,” she said, emphasizing the need for a player who understands Mahomes’ skill set and can contribute to the team’s success.

The Chiefs’ current situation is a stark contrast to their recent successes. As they navigate this challenging start to the season, fans and analysts alike are left wondering whether they can recover in time to maintain their status as championship contenders. With Mahomes at the helm, there remains a glimmer of hope, but significant changes may be necessary to return to form and compete effectively in the league.
