Controversy Erupts as Ireland Falls to France in World Cup Quarter-Final
Ireland’s hopes of advancing to the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup were dashed in a dramatic quarter-final match against France on October 14, 2023. After leading 13-0 at halftime, Ireland ultimately lost 18-13 at Sandy Park in Exeter. The match’s intensity was heightened by an incident involving France flanker Axelle Berthoumieu, who is now facing potential disciplinary action for allegedly biting Ireland’s Aoife Wafer.
Footage from the match appeared to show Berthoumieu biting Wafer’s arm, prompting concerns about player safety and sportsmanship. Wafer was seen discussing the incident with referee Aimee Barrett-Theron, indicating that she had been bitten. Ireland captain Sam Monaghan later confirmed that she had also raised the issue with match officials, but no immediate action was taken during the game.
“I spoke to the referee,” Monaghan stated. “Aoife told me — I didn’t see it myself but I spoke to the referee and asked them.” Biting is classified as a serious offense under World Rugby’s disciplinary regulations, with a minimum ban of 12 matches for such actions. If retrospective action is taken, Berthoumieu could face exclusion from the remainder of the tournament, jeopardizing France’s chances in their upcoming semi-final against England.
Former England captain Maggie Alphonsi criticized the incident, calling it “disgraceful.” In an interview with the BBC, she expressed her disappointment, stating, “I hate seeing that in the game — men’s or women’s. It’s very clear. She should be punished for that.” Alphonsi lamented the overshadowing of the Women’s Rugby World Cup’s overall positive atmosphere by such incidents, remarking, “It’s sad because the Women’s Rugby World Cup has been a celebration. It’s such a shame that now the headlines are going to be dominated by a silly incident from a player who didn’t need to do that.”
The fallout from this incident continues as rugby fans and officials alike await the outcome of any potential disciplinary measures. The implications for Berthoumieu could significantly impact France’s strategy and performance as they prepare for the semi-final clash against the tournament hosts, England, scheduled for October 21, 2023.
As the competition progresses, the focus now shifts to how the governing bodies of rugby will respond to ensure the integrity of the game is maintained while also prioritizing player safety.
