Eddie Hearn has clarified that heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua will not fight in Africa this December, stating that February is a more realistic timeframe for his return to the ring. The announcement comes amid growing speculation about Joshua staging a comeback in locations such as Ghana and Nigeria, countries with significant ties to his heritage.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Hearn dismissed rumors surrounding a December fight, emphasizing, “No, definitely not [fight in Africa agreed]. There’s all kinds of rumours swirling around about Anthony Joshua at the moment.” He elaborated that while discussions had occurred about a potential fight this year, the likelihood of that happening is diminishing as February approaches.

Hearn explained that Joshua is currently in training camp and focused on his preparation for a fight after being out of the ring for approximately a year and a half. He acknowledged the challenges faced by Joshua in returning to a high-pressure environment after such a lengthy absence. Hearn remarked, “As I said, at this stage, it feels like February will be his next fight. Whether that’s a second fight or whether that’s his first fight back, we’ll see.”

The promoter highlighted the potential benefits of a preliminary fight, which would allow Joshua to ease back into competitive boxing. “We just talked about the kind of blessing that would be a run-out fight without those kind of pressures,” Hearn added. He noted that while Joshua has received offers for fights in both Ghana and Nigeria, the focus remains on his training and readiness for a significant return.

Hearn also mentioned ongoing negotiations regarding a multi-fight deal with Turki Al-Sheikh, which could include a much-anticipated matchup against fellow heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. He stated, “We have had offers to stage an AJ fight in Ghana. Also approaches to stage an AJ fight in Nigeria.” This potential deal highlights the many options available for Joshua’s future bouts.

In further comments to Sky Sports, Hearn underscored Joshua’s desire to face Fury, stating, “AJ wants it bad. I feel like Fury is the only person he has really talked about with venom.” Hearn expressed that if both fighters do not meet in the ring, it would be a missed opportunity for both their careers and boxing fans alike.

Hearn concluded by stressing the importance of preparing Joshua physically and mentally for a potential clash with Fury, saying, “The key is to get him in the best physical condition and frame of mind.” The boxing community eagerly awaits confirmation of Joshua’s next fight, with February now the target date for his return.
