Finn Harps to Benefit Financially from Oisín Cooney’s Move to Burnley
The departure of goalkeeper Oisín Cooney from Finn Harps to Burnley FC marks a significant milestone for the League of Ireland club. While Burnley has not paid an upfront transfer fee for the 18-year-old, the Donegal outfit will receive financial benefits linked to performance-related clauses within the deal, along with a percentage of any future transfer fee should Cooney move from Turf Moor.
Cooney joined Finn Harps in 2022, beginning his journey with the Under-15s team after transferring from Clonmany Shamrocks. His rise through the ranks was swift, as he moved up to the Under-19s the next season while also training with the first team. In total, Cooney has made 18 first-team appearances and represented Ireland at the Under-16, Under-17, and Under-19 levels.
Club Leadership Expresses Pride
Finn Harps Chairperson Ian Harkin expressed immense pride in Cooney’s achievements. He stated, “We are immensely proud of Oisín and the progress he has made with us. His move to Burnley is a testament to his talent and dedication, and we look forward to seeing him continue his journey at the highest level. The structure of the deal also ensures Finn Harps will benefit from Oisín’s future success.”
The club’s first-team manager, Kevin McHugh, who also heads the academy, shared his excitement over Cooney’s transfer. He remarked, “Everyone at the club is delighted to see Oisin make this move, and we wish him every success going forward with Burnley FC.” McHugh acknowledged the contributions of Cooney’s earlier coaches, including Eamon Curry, stating, “It’s great to see a Premier League club take interest in our players and marks another milestone on our current journey as a football club to develop local talent, give them the opportunity to play senior football and ultimately maximise their potential.”
With Cooney’s transition to the Premier League, Finn Harps stands to gain not only from immediate financial support through performance clauses but also from his potential future transfers. This move underscores the club’s commitment to nurturing local talent and providing pathways to higher levels of competition. As the football landscape continues to evolve, Finn Harps looks forward to leveraging this opportunity to enhance its reputation and financial standing.
