Heavyweights Shine on Final Day of Abu Dhabi Grand Slam 2025

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam 2025 concluded on a high note as heavyweight judokas showcased their skills during an exhilarating third day of competition. The event featured standout performances from athletes including Lasha Bekauri, who dominated the -90kg category, and Anna-Monta Olek, who triumphed in a rematch against reigning champion Alice Bellandi.

In the -90kg final, double Olympic Champion Lasha Bekauri proved nearly unbeatable. He faced Moldovan rising star Latisev and secured victory with a display of exceptional technique and strategy, reinforcing his status as a leading contender in the division. Medals were presented by Mr. Naser Al Tamimi, the General Treasurer of the International Judo Federation (IJF).

Olek’s victory was particularly noteworthy as she overcame current world and Olympic Champion Alice Bellandi in the -78kg final. Their previous encounter had ended in Bellandi’s favor, but Olek’s groundwork skills shone through this time, earning her the gold medal. The medal presentation was conducted by Dr. Lisa Allan, IJF Secretary General.

In the -100kg final, former world champion Arman Adamian faced an early setback against teammate Bifov, who scored first. Nevertheless, Adamian showcased his resilience by scoring twice to reclaim his lead and secure his first gold medal in two years. The +78kg category saw Miki Mukonoki execute a stunning uchi-mata to defeat Xinran Niu. Mukonoki’s ability to overcome a size disadvantage highlighted her technical prowess and solidified her reputation in the sport. The medals were awarded by Mr. Simon Benhamou, CEO of CBH Bank.

Finally, in the +100kg final, Gonchigsuren Batkhuyag faced off against World and Olympic medallist Tamerlan Bashaev. Batkhuyag managed to maintain a yuko lead throughout the bout, ultimately securing the final gold medal of the tournament. The medals were presented by Mr. Obaid Al Anzi, IJF Vice President.
