Ipswich Town Signs Kasey McAteer for £12 Million from Leicester

Ipswich Town has bolstered its squad by signing Kasey McAteer for approximately £12 million. The 23-year-old attacking player has completed a transfer from Leicester City, ending a 15-year association with the club. McAteer has signed a four-year contract and joins a growing Irish contingent at Ipswich, which includes players such as Sammie Szmodics, Dara O’Shea, Chiedozie Ogbene, and Jack Taylor.
“I’m delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started,” McAteer expressed. He highlighted the appealing project underway at Ipswich, stating, “I want to add myself to that.” Having played at Ipswich as an opponent, he is aware of the strong support the team enjoys. “As soon as I heard Ipswich were interested, it was the only move I wanted to make,” he added.
The aim for McAteer and his new teammates is clear: promotion. “The aim is to get promoted again and that’s what we will push for every day. I want to be a part of that and I aspire to be the best version of myself,” he noted. McAteer further expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with his new teammates and meeting the fans.
McAteer’s previous club, Leicester City, experienced relegation from the Premier League last season and has begun the new Championship campaign with one victory and one defeat from their first two matches. Ipswich Town currently sits five places below Leicester in 17th position, having drawn both of their opening games. This Saturday, Ipswich will travel to face Preston North End.
In terms of international play, McAteer made his mark by scoring his first goal for the Republic of Ireland during a June 2023 match against Senegal, which ended in a 1-1 draw. He has earned six caps since making his debut against England last year.
The addition of McAteer not only strengthens Ipswich’s roster but also enhances its representation of Irish talent, making the upcoming season an exciting one for both the club and its supporters.
