Ireland and Scotland will once again face off in the Pool stages of the Rugby World Cup, now set for 2027. The draw, conducted earlier today, has placed both teams in Pool D, alongside Uruguay and Portugal. Head Coach Andy Farrell expressed that the ongoing rivalry and familiarity between the two teams could provide valuable insights for both sides.

With the World Cup expanding to include 24 teams, the winners of this pool will advance to face one of the third-placed teams in the knockout stages. The runner-up will likely encounter France in the Round of 16, but Farrell emphasized that the team must remain focused on their own performance rather than getting distracted by potential matchups.

“You can try and second-guess it and think all different permutations are going to work out in a certain way, but we know that a World Cup always throws up these types of things, that’s why we love it so much,” Farrell stated. He acknowledged the importance of concentrating on their own games first, as unexpected outcomes can always arise.

Reflecting on the anticipated match against Scotland, which will mark the third consecutive World Cup meeting, Farrell commented, “You could have put a bet on it being Scotland couldn’t you, with the way that it’s gone over the last couple of tournaments.” He noted the strong tradition of competition between the two nations, stating that their annual encounters in the Six Nations provide a backdrop for their rivalry.

Farrell continued, “It’s amazing the rivalry that we’ve had over the years and who would have thought in the last couple of World Cups that we’ve met each other.” He highlighted the respect Ireland holds for Scotland as a formidable opponent, describing them as an “unbelievably dangerous, quality world-class side.”

Having worked closely with many Scottish players over the summer, Farrell believes this has fostered a deeper understanding between the teams. He remarked, “Knowing a few more guys, there’s insight there both ways.” While acknowledging that team dynamics can change considerably over two years, he is enthusiastic about the upcoming competition.

On the other teams in their pool, Farrell noted that Ireland has faced Portugal before and trained with them multiple times, providing a degree of familiarity. Regarding Uruguay, he mentioned that Warren Gatland has done substantial scouting work, indicating that Ireland is preparing thoroughly for all potential opponents in their group.

“Overall, I was super excited actually, it got the old hairs on the skin standing up, definitely, so that’s the way it should be,” Farrell concluded, capturing the anticipation surrounding the upcoming tournament. With the Rugby World Cup set to showcase thrilling matches, the clash between Ireland and Scotland promises to be one of the highlights in the tournament.
