Jamie Vardy Shines with Brace in Cremonese’s 3-1 Victory
Former Premier League star Jamie Vardy delivered an impressive performance on Monday, scoring his first brace in Serie A as Cremonese secured a notable 3-1 victory over Bologna. This win marked a significant moment in Vardy’s late-career adventure in Italy, where the 38-year-old forward continues to make his mark.
Cremonese, currently positioned 11th in the league with 17 points, inflicted Bologna’s first home defeat of the season at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. The outcome had the potential to narrow Bologna’s gap to the league leaders, AC Milan and Napoli, but it was Vardy who emerged as the standout player on a rainy night.
Vardy reflected on the match, humorously noting the weather, stating, “I think we were just missing a bit of rain, this is a typical midweek in the UK.” He emphasized the importance of the three points for his team, saying, “It’s another step in the right direction. It’s all about commitment and wanting what’s best for the club.” His comments highlight a shared focus on progress within the team.
The scoring began with a goal from Martin Payero in the 31st minute, putting Cremonese ahead. Vardy doubled the lead just five minutes later, converting a chance set up by Federico Bonazzoli. He coolly slotted the ball through the legs of Bologna’s goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia, showcasing his trademark poise in front of goal.
Bologna managed to respond just before half-time when Riccardo Orsolini converted a penalty, giving the home side hope. However, Vardy struck again shortly after the break, capitalizing on a pass from Tomasso Barbieri to extend Cremonese’s lead, bringing his goal tally for the club to four in just nine matches.
After the match, Cremonese’s coach, Davide Nicola, praised Vardy’s influence on the team. “Great players are easy to handle, they know what they’re supposed to do and they know how to do it,” Nicola remarked. He added that Vardy’s experience and good humor have been vital for the team’s dynamics.
Vardy joined Cremonese in September 2023 on a one-year contract, with an option for an additional year contingent on the club’s performance in the top flight. He has expressed a desire to embrace a new experience in a football culture he admires, playing for a club supported by local billionaire Giovanni Arvedi.
With this victory, Cremonese not only halted a three-match losing streak but also demonstrated their potential to compete in Serie A. Vardy’s contributions will likely be crucial as the team seeks to solidify their position in the league as the season unfolds.
