John Higgins Faces Motivation Struggles After Wuhan Open Victory

Renowned snooker player John Higgins has expressed significant concerns regarding his motivation to compete at a professional level following his recent victory at the Wuhan Open. The 50-year-old Scottish athlete began the tournament with a commanding 5-1 win over Welshman Dylan Emery, showcasing his skill with breaks of 79, 50, 54, and 80. However, off the table, Higgins revealed he is struggling to find the drive to continue playing.

Higgins Reflects on Personal Challenges

Despite the triumph on the snooker table, Higgins shared feelings of uncertainty and lack of enthusiasm for the sport. He cited a recent trip to Dallas, where he celebrated his 50th birthday by visiting the location of President John F. Kennedy‘s assassination, as a high point that has since left him feeling “down.” Higgins indicated that he may have reconsidered participating in the ranking event in China, stating, “I don’t know if I should have come to this event.”

Higgins admitted that his current state of mind has adversely affected his technique, saying, “My technique is really all over the place. I’m just one of the guys that I need to be on it — or I need to feel as if I’m on it.” He revealed that he finds it difficult to commit to practice, noting, “I’m struggling to put half an hour in. And at this level you cannot mix it with the best players.”

After competing in the Wuhan Open, Higgins plans to take at least a month off to reassess his mental and physical state. “I’ll play this event and then take a month off and then see where I am at,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll come back refreshed and re-energised and with a better mindset.”
