Kai Trump Makes Pro Golf Debut with Rory McIlroy’s Support
Kai Trump, granddaughter of former US President Donald Trump, is set to make her professional golf debut at The Annika tournament this week. The 18-year-old golfer, who is the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump, will compete in the LPGA Tour event, which starts on March 14, 2024.
Rory McIlroy, a prominent figure in the golf world, has expressed his admiration for Kai’s skills. The young golfer caught McIlroy’s attention during a round they played together at the Genesis Open in March. After witnessing her impressive shot from the rough onto the green, he praised her, stating, “Good shot, Kai,” and remarked, “You’re too good for this YouTube golf.”
Kai Trump is among over 100 players, including WNBA star Caitlin Clark, participating in The Annika, which features a substantial prize fund of £2.5 million. Her participation has stirred considerable interest, partly due to her familial connections. During a press conference before the tournament, she was asked if her grandfather would attend. “He’s not coming this weekend. He’s running the world right now, so a little busy,” she clarified.
Despite her grandfather’s high-profile status, Kai described her relationship with him as normal. “To me, he’s just a normal grandpa. Always has been,” she stated. On the topic of his golfing skills, she added, “He’s pretty good. We have some tight matches.” When pressed about whether she has ever beaten him on the course, she coyly replied, “I’ll leave that up to you to decide.”
Kai has received one of three coveted sponsor exemptions for the tournament. Ranked No. 461 by the American Junior Golf Association, she first gained public attention during last year’s Republican National Convention. Looking ahead, she has committed to play golf at the University of Miami in 2026.
In addition to her athletic pursuits, Kai has made strides in the fashion industry, launching an apparel and lifestyle brand aimed at empowering young women in sports. She has over six million followers across social media platforms, enhancing her visibility in both golf and lifestyle sectors.
Guidance from golfing legend Tiger Woods, who is in a relationship with her mother, has been instrumental for Kai. “He told me to go out there and have fun and just go with the flow. Whatever happens, happens,” she shared. She expressed excitement about competing against top players, stating, “I think I’m going to learn a lot no matter what happens. Competing with the best players is going to be cool.”
Kai Trump’s professional debut at The Annika promises to be a significant milestone in her burgeoning golf career, and the golf community will be watching closely to see how she performs on this prominent stage.
