Kelly Brady Shines as Athlone Town Secures Historic Domestic Double
Athlone Town made history on March 15, 2024, by securing their first-ever domestic double, thanks to a stellar performance from Kelly Brady. The US-born striker scored a hat-trick in a thrilling FAI Cup final against a determined Bohemians team at Tallaght Stadium. Despite a strong start from Bohemians, led by Alannah McEvoy and Aoibhe Brennan, it was Athlone’s day as they showcased their resilience and skill.
The match began with a sensational goal from McEvoy just six minutes in. The former Shamrock Rovers player struck from the edge of the box after a brilliant interception by teammate Hannah Healy. Her shot flew into the top corner, giving Bohemians an early lead and setting the stage for an exciting contest.
Athlone quickly responded, with a series of attacking plays that began to unsettle Bohemians’ defense. Madie Gibson posed a significant threat, drawing crucial saves from Bohemians’ goalkeeper and captain, Rachael Kelly. However, it was Brady who turned the tide in Athlone’s favor.
In the 23rd minute, Athlone equalized when center-back Natalie McNally sent a cross to Brady, who headed the ball home expertly. Just 13 minutes later, a quick free kick from Hannah Waesch found Brady again, allowing her to score her second goal with a powerful header.
Brady’s performance was a showcase of her striking prowess. After halftime, she completed her hat-trick in the 48th minute, capitalizing on a deflected effort from Gibson. Despite slipping as she shot, Brady managed to send the ball past Kelly, marking a triumphant moment in her career. The stadium erupted as fans celebrated her achievement, chanting her name.
While Athlone dominated the second half, Bohemians remained tenacious. They managed to pull one back in the 74th minute when Brennan struck a stunning goal, reminding everyone of their fighting spirit. Still, Athlone’s experience shone through as they effectively managed the closing minutes of the match.
Athlone Town’s victory was a culmination of hard work and determination, culminating in a historic moment for the club. With this win, they not only secured the cup but also solidified their status as a formidable force in women’s football.
Brady’s performance also caught the eye of Ireland’s national team coach, Carla Ward, who was in attendance as she prepares her squad for the upcoming Nations League playoff against Belgium. Brady’s hat-trick brought her season tally to an impressive 26 goals, making a strong case for her inclusion in the national team.
The match drew a crowd of 3,608 fans, who witnessed a thrilling display of skill and determination. Athlone’s players celebrated their victory jubilantly, marking a day they will remember as they danced long into the night, securing their place in history.
