Limerick Council Proposes Civic Reception for Hurling Star Declan Hannon
Declan Hannon, the celebrated Limerick hurler, is set to be honored with a proposed civic reception following his recent retirement from inter-county hurling. The motion, introduced by Fianna Fáil councillor Bridie Collins during the Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District meeting in November, highlights Hannon’s significant contributions to the sport and the local community.
Councillor Collins characterized the reception as a “lovely honour” for Hannon, emphasizing that he would be a “well-deserved recipient” of such recognition. Supporting this sentiment, Fine Gael councillor Adam Teskey praised Hannon as a “magnificent hurler” who played a pivotal role in several “fantastic victories” for the county. Hannon, a native of Adare, has been credited with championing Limerick hurling and inspiring both young and old with his vision for the sport.
Details of the Proposed Reception
Discussions among council members followed the proposal, focusing on how and where the reception would be held. The Cathaoirleach, Cllr Ger Ward, suggested that the event be organized by the full Limerick City and County Council rather than just the municipal district.
Councillor Teskey proposed the Rathkeale House Hotel as a potential venue for the reception. Nevertheless, fellow Fine Gael member Cllr Stephen Keary opposed this idea, expressing concerns over the financial implications for the area. Ultimately, the council decided to put forward a motion for the civic reception at the upcoming full meeting of Limerick City and County Council scheduled for November 24, 2023.
Director of Planning Vincent Murray clarified that any proposal for the civic reception would require approval from the Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery.
Hannon’s Legacy in Hurling
Declan Hannon announced his retirement from inter-county hurling last month after an illustrious career that began with his debut for Limerick in 2010. Over the years, he transitioned from the half-forward line to establish himself as one of the game’s great number sixes.
Hannon made history as the first player to captain a team to five All-Ireland titles. In addition to this remarkable achievement, he secured seven Munster titles and two Allianz League titles while donning the green jersey of Limerick. His legacy is marked not only by his individual accolades but also by his dedication to the sport and his community.
As the proposal for a civic reception moves forward, the recognition of Hannon’s contributions to hurling and the local area is anticipated to resonate with fans and players alike.
