A group of talented swimmers from Limerick has been selected for the Ireland team competing in the European Aquatics Championships (25m) taking place from December 2 to December 7, 2023, in Lublin, Poland. The team consists of 13 members, including three senior international debutants. Among them are Denis O’Brien from Mungret and Eoin Corby from Clarina, both representing the National Centre Limerick.

Denis O’Brien has made headlines this year after winning gold in the 400m Freestyle at the Irish Youth and Senior Championships held at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre. O’Brien not only secured the top position but also shattered the previous record set by Finn McGeever in 2018, finishing with an impressive time of 3:56.99. His remarkable performance has established him as a rising star in Irish swimming.

Eoin Corby, a member of the World Championship team, also brings significant experience to the Ireland squad. Earlier this year, Corby competed at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore and achieved a noteworthy silver medal at the European Aquatics U23 Championships in Samorin, Slovakia. He earned this medal in the 200m Breaststroke final, becoming Ireland’s fifth-ever European U23 medallist.

Both swimmers are under the guidance of coach John Szaranek, whose expertise has been instrumental in their development. O’Brien expressed gratitude for the support he has received through the Adopt an Athlete Programme, acknowledging the commitment of sponsors including Cobi Sport, EI Electronics Shannon, Compuscript Ltd, Pemcas, and the Great National South Court Hotel. These sponsors have committed to supporting both him and his sister, Lucy O’Brien, for four years.

The upcoming championships in Poland represent a significant opportunity for these athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage. As they prepare to compete, both O’Brien and Corby aim to build on their prior successes and contribute to Ireland’s growing legacy in competitive swimming.
