LIV Golf Expands Tournament Format to 72 Holes Starting 2026
LIV Golf has announced a significant change in its tournament format, transitioning to 72 holes starting in 2026. This decision marks a departure from the current 54-hole format that has defined LIV Golf events since its inception in 2022. The move aligns the league more closely with traditional golfing competitions, such as those on the PGA Tour, which typically consist of four rounds.
The change comes after LIV Golf faced challenges in gaining Official World Golf Ranking points due to its unconventional structure. The new format will allow tournaments to begin on Thursday and conclude on Sunday, mirroring the scheduling of established leagues and enhancing the competitive environment.
Jon Rahm, a two-time major champion and the reigning individual champion of LIV Golf, expressed his enthusiasm for the new format. “This is a win for the League, and the players,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of competition in refining skills, noting, “Moving to 72 holes is the logical next step that strengthens the competition, tests us more fully, and if the growing galleries from last season are any indication, delivers more of what the fans want.”
Another prominent figure, Dustin Johnson, who previously held the world No. 1 ranking, echoed Rahm’s sentiments. “It’s a great move for the league and I’m excited for it. Playing 72 holes just feels a little more like the big tournaments we’ve all grown up playing,” Johnson remarked. He believes that the extended format will provide the best players with a greater opportunity to showcase their skills.
Implications for Players and Rankings
The adjustment to a 72-hole format carries significant implications for the roster of star players within LIV Golf. Currently, the lack of Official World Golf Ranking points has resulted in a dramatic drop for some participants. For instance, Johnson has fallen to 604th in the rankings, a stark contrast to his previous status as the top player in the world. The changes aim to address such disparities and enhance the league’s credibility.
Scott O’Neil, chief executive of LIV Golf, articulated the importance of this transition. “The move to 72 holes marks a pivotal new chapter for LIV Golf that strengthens our league, challenges our elite field of players, and delivers more of the world-class golf, energy, innovation and access that our global audience wants,” he stated.
As LIV Golf prepares for this new format, the anticipation among players and fans is palpable. The league has garnered attention for its unique approach to the sport and aims to continue drawing larger crowds. The shift to a more conventional tournament structure could potentially attract more viewers, enhancing the overall experience for fans and participants alike.
The expansion to 72 holes not only elevates the stakes for the players but also signifies LIV Golf’s commitment to adapting and evolving within the competitive landscape of professional golf. This strategic move reflects an understanding of the traditional elements that fans and players value, all while maintaining the innovative spirit that has characterized LIV Golf since its establishment.
