Ma’a Nonu Shines with Late Try in Toulon’s 45-21 Triumph
Toulon secured a convincing 45-21 victory over Racing 92 in the Top 14 on Sunday, with veteran centre Ma’a Nonu scoring a late try. This win adds to Toulon’s impressive home performance this season, having already defeated league leaders Pau and Castres. The match showcased Toulon’s offensive strength, culminating in an electrifying display at their home ground.
The home team took control early, scoring four tries before half-time. Ignacio Brex, Melvyn Jaminet, Gael Drean, and English No. 8 Zak Mercer all crossed the line, showcasing Toulon’s attacking prowess. Jaminet contributed significantly, converting five tries and adding a penalty. Racing 92 managed to keep the game competitive with a try from French centre Gael Fickou in the first half, followed by a second try from flanker Maxime Baudonne.
Despite Racing’s efforts, Toulon maintained their lead, and the match appeared to be wrapping up without an offensive bonus point for the home side. According to rugby regulations, a bonus point is awarded if the winning team scores three more tries than their opponents. Just as it seemed Toulon might fall short of this bonus, Brian Alainu’uese pushed through to score a sixth try for Toulon in added time, sealing a comprehensive win and securing the bonus point.
In a notable setback for Toulon, influential scrum-half Baptiste Serin was forced to exit the match due to injury in the 27th minute. The 46-time capped player left the field holding his ribs and was replaced by Scottish international Ben White. This injury could have significant implications for the French national team, as head coach Fabien Galthie prepares to announce his squad for the upcoming November Tests against South Africa, Fiji, and Australia.
Galthie is already facing challenges in the scrum-half position, as he will be without captain Antoine Dupont (knee injury), Baptiste Couilloud (shoulder injury), and Maxime Lucu (hand injury). The coach’s upcoming selections will be crucial as France aims to build momentum heading into these high-stakes international matches.
Toulon’s victory not only strengthens their position in the league but also highlights their ability to perform under pressure, a critical factor as the season progresses. The team’s cohesion and skill will be tested in upcoming fixtures, making their recent form an encouraging sign for both players and fans alike.
