Manchester United Signs Senne Lammens for £18.1 Million

Manchester United has officially signed goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Antwerp for a fee of £18.1 million as part of their efforts to address ongoing goalkeeping challenges. The 23-year-old has committed to a five-year contract with the club, marking a significant addition to United’s squad after they successfully outmaneuvered interest from several competing clubs.
The decision to recruit Lammens comes after a series of disappointing performances from current goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana, both of whom have faced criticism for conceding goals in three separate matches this season. United had also contemplated a late bid for Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez, but ultimately secured Lammens before the transfer window closed.
Impressive Stats and Ambitions
Lammens enjoyed a standout season last year, recording more saves than any other goalkeeper in Europe’s top ten leagues. He achieved a remarkable post-shot expected goals metric of +14.5, highlighting his ability to prevent goals effectively. His performance has garnered attention and respect across the footballing community, making him a valuable asset for Manchester United.
Expressing his excitement about joining the historic club, Lammens stated, “I am extremely proud to be joining Manchester United. It is a real dream come true. The past few years have been an amazing journey, and it’s now ended in an incredible destination and hopefully the beginning of something special.” He added that he looks forward to working with coach Ruben Amorim and integrating with his new teammates.
United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, praised Lammens, noting, “Senne is an excellent young goalkeeper with great potential; we are delighted that he has chosen to join Manchester United after significant interest from a number of clubs.”
Summer Transfer Activity
Lammens becomes the fifth signing for Manchester United this summer, following a substantial investment of £200 million on attacking talents, including Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko. Additionally, the club acquired wing-back Diego Leon. The transfer window was notably busy for United, characterized by the sale of winger Antony and loan moves for Jadon Sancho and Rasmus Hojlund.
As Manchester United prepares for the remainder of the season, the addition of Lammens is seen as a critical step toward stabilizing their goalkeeping situation and enhancing their overall performance on the pitch.
