Meath LGFA Seeks New Leadership After All-Ireland Final Loss

Shane McCormack has stepped down as the manager of Meath LGFA following the team’s defeat in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) final against Dublin. Under McCormack’s leadership, which began before the 2024 season, Meath made significant strides, reaching the All-Ireland quarter-final last year and ultimately advancing to the finals this year.
In a season marked by resilience, Meath faced a tough start but rallied to defeat Kerry in the semi-finals. However, the final proved challenging, with Meath suffering a 2-16 to 0-10 loss to Dublin. This defeat has prompted not only McCormack’s departure but also that of performance coach Tony Reilly, who has also stepped aside from his role.
Statement from Meath LGFA
In an official statement, Meath LGFA confirmed the resignations of both McCormack and Reilly. “We would like to sincerely thank Shane and Tony for their dedication, commitment, and contribution to the team during their time in charge,” the statement read. “Their efforts, both on and off the field, have been greatly appreciated by players, management, and supporters alike. We wish them both the very best in their future endeavours.”
McCormack, originally from Kildare, expressed his disappointment following the final, particularly for his players. “They didn’t deserve that,” he remarked, acknowledging the hard work put in by the team over the past year and a half. He noted that being 11 points down at half-time made the challenge even steeper, stating, “Maybe if that goal chance went in in the first few minutes, it would have given us a little bit more momentum going into the second half.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the setback, McCormack highlighted a positive aspect of the match: Meath only lost the second half by a single point. He pointed out that nine players achieved their first senior start in an All-Ireland final, emphasizing the potential for growth within the squad. “There are 16 girls here on this panel that we brought in over the last year and a half. They’re a super bunch and I know they’ll stick together,” he added.
As Meath LGFA embarks on the search for new leadership, the organization faces the challenge of building on the momentum generated during McCormack’s tenure. The team’s journey in the competition showcased their potential and resilience, leaving supporters hopeful for what lies ahead.
