Angie Benhaffaf, a devoted mother from Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork, has been named the Lidl Family Carer of the Year for her remarkable dedication to her twin sons, Hassan and Hussein, who were conjoined at birth. Recognized for her 16 years of “extraordinary care,” Benhaffaf’s journey began with harrowing news during her twelve-week scan, where she was informed that her twins might not survive and that her own life could be at risk.

Hassan and Hussein were born sharing every organ except their hearts and each with only one leg. Since their birth, Benhaffaf has been a relentless advocate for their care. According to a spokesperson for Family Carers Ireland, she has remained by their side through 75 surgeries, enduring months spent in hospitals far from home, and dealing with numerous medical emergencies. She has often slept on hospital floors, gone weeks without adequate rest, and fought tirelessly to secure the medical attention her sons require, all while nurturing a joyful home life for her daughters.

The twins have grown to become award-winning para-athletes, representing Ireland on four occasions and winning multiple gold and silver medals in wheelchair basketball and athletics. Alongside her caregiving responsibilities, Benhaffaf has also managed to raise over €105,000 for children’s charities, showcasing her commitment not only to her family but also to the wider community.

Catherine Cox of Family Carers Ireland praised Benhaffaf’s resilience, stating, “Angie’s story is one of extraordinary resilience, unconditional love and unwavering commitment.” She emphasized that despite facing some of the most challenging circumstances, Benhaffaf has created a family environment filled with joy and hope. Cox added, “Her story is a powerful reminder that family carers must be fully recognized and supported for the vital role they play.”

Recognizing Family Carers Across Ireland

Now in its 18th year, the Lidl Family Carer of the Year Awards celebrate the critical contributions of family caregivers throughout Ireland. Each week, more than 500,000 individuals provide over 19 million hours of care, often without sufficient support from the State. Family Carers Ireland reports that the contributions of these caregivers are valued at over €20 billion annually.

In addition to Benhaffaf’s accolade, several regional awards were presented. Alison McManus from Saggart, Dublin, was named the Leinster Family Carer of the Year. Brendan Dee from Carrick-on-Shannon in Co. Leitrim received the Connacht award, while Mary O’Sullivan from Cavan Town was awarded the Ulster regional title.

Family Carers Ireland also recognized young caregivers, with Mason and Kian Dooley (16 and 17) from Drogheda winning the Leinster title. Scott Rumgay (22) from Tralee in Co. Kerry took home the Munster award, Mia Doherty (12) won the Connacht award, and Caelen McVitty (11) from Ballyconnell in Co. Cavan earned the Ulster award.

The Lidl Family Carer of the Year Awards serve as a vital platform to highlight the essential role that family carers play in society, ensuring their invaluable contributions are acknowledged and supported.
