NFL Takes Over Dublin: Excitement Builds for Vikings vs. Steelers

The NFL arrives in Dublin this weekend, bringing with it an air of excitement as the Minnesota Vikings face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Croke Park on September 3, 2023. With an anticipated crowd of approximately 76,000 fans, the event promises to be a significant milestone for American football in Ireland. Organisers expect over 20,000 fans to travel from the United States, alongside a substantial number from Europe and a dedicated local fan base.
Events throughout the week leading up to the game are designed to engage fans and showcase the sport. An official NFL shop will operate from September 1 to September 8 at 133 St Stephen’s Green, allowing fans to purchase merchandise from their favourite teams.
Dublin Castle will host a range of activities, including opportunities to participate in flag football and test field goal skills. Fans can also enter for a chance to win tickets to the Super Bowl. The Lombardi Trophy and all 59 Super Bowl rings will be on display at Dublin City Hall from September 1 through September 3, providing a unique photo opportunity for attendees.
Local pubs are also getting into the spirit of the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers have chosen Fitzsimons in Temple Bar as their official venue for the weekend. Fans of the Minnesota Vikings can gather at JR Mahon’s on the quays, while the Green Bay Packers will take over Sinnott’s on September 2. The Kansas City Chiefs will claim Murray’s from September 1 to September 3, and the Steelers will occupy Merrion Square Park throughout the week.
The week is set to feature an array of entertainment, including appearances from NFL legends, fan activities, and merchandise sales. Fans can look forward to a watch party for the game itself, ensuring a lively atmosphere filled with camaraderie.
In a notable event, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will visit Whelans on Camden Street. Hosted by Michael McQuaid, Goodell will be joined by Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney and NFL legends Jerome Bettis and John Randle. Attendees will receive a drink voucher with their ticket and have the chance to win tickets for the game. The event begins at 14:00 and concludes at 15:00, but tickets have already sold out. Fans are encouraged to keep checking for any additional availability.
As Dublin welcomes the NFL, the excitement surrounding this event reflects the growing popularity of American football in Europe, making this weekend one for the history books in Irish sports.
