Róisín Ní Riain Claims Silver in 100m Backstroke at World Championships

Róisín Ní Riain won her third medal at the Para Swimming World Championships in Singapore, securing a silver medal in the S13 100m backstroke. This achievement adds to her impressive performance, as she touched the wall with a time of 1:06.26, finishing just behind American swimmer Gia Pergolini, who set a new personal best of 1:05.49.
In a post-race interview, Ní Riain expressed her excitement, stating, “That hurt the most the 100 backstroke has probably ever hurt! My PB was two years old so really happy to come out and get a new one.” Her determination was evident as she competed fiercely in a highly competitive field.
Previous Achievements Highlight Ní Riain’s Success
The Limerick swimmer has a remarkable track record in this event. She previously won gold at the 2023 Para Swimming Championships held in Manchester, finishing at 1:06.62 and clinching victory by a narrow margin of just 0.09 seconds. Additionally, Ní Riain earned a silver medal in the same event at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, clocking in at 1:07.27.
Her consistent performance at elite levels highlights her position as a leading athlete in the S13 category, showcasing both her skill and resilience in swimming.
As the championships continue, fellow competitor Dearbhaile Brady is set to participate in the S6 50m Freestyle, which will take place as a direct final. Anticipation builds for her race, as she aims to make her mark in the event.
The Para Swimming World Championships are being held in Singapore from March 10 to March 17, 2024, featuring numerous athletes from around the globe. With each race, competitors like Ní Riain continue to inspire many through their dedication and remarkable achievements.
