Roy Keane Critiques Manchester United’s Leadership Group

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has expressed strong reservations about the club’s new leadership structure, implemented by head coach Ruben Amorim. Following a challenging 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season, Amorim has worked to reinforce the squad, bringing in players such as Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. The Portuguese manager aims to foster unity and accountability within the team by establishing a leadership group, which includes club captain Bruno Fernandes, alongside seasoned players Harry Maguire, Tom Heaton, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, and Noussair Mazraoui.
Amorim outlined the rationale behind this new approach, stating, “We have a leadership group now. It’s not just Bruno. It’s not just Harry. It’s six guys. They are responsible for the group.” He has emphasized that these players will address minor issues that arose last season, indicating a shift towards greater player responsibility. Amorim believes that small adjustments in behavior and structure can significantly strengthen the team dynamic.
Despite this optimistic outlook, Keane’s past critiques of several leadership group members raise questions about the efficacy of this new arrangement. He has consistently challenged Fernandes’ capabilities as captain, suggesting that he should be relieved of his responsibilities. In a discussion with Sky Sports in October 2023, Keane stated, “Today having watched him again, I would take the captaincy off him 100 percent. Fernandes is not captain material.”
Keane’s concerns extend to the defensive skills of Dalot and Mazraoui, particularly after United’s 3-0 loss to Liverpool in September. He criticized their positioning and awareness, asserting, “When they lose it [the ball], they are all over the place.” This lack of control, he argues, makes the team susceptible to counterattacks from competent opponents.
The former captain has also pointed out Lisandro Martinez‘s need for greater composure on the ball. Keane remarked, “Fans love him to bits, but he needs just a little bit of composure.” He believes that as an experienced player, Martinez must demonstrate the poise expected at this level.
In contrast, Keane has been somewhat more lenient towards Heaton, likely due to his limited appearances since joining the club in 2021. Despite his harsh criticism of other players, Keane acknowledged that he had been overly critical of Maguire in the past, even offering an apology. He stated, “I was harsh on Harry Maguire for footballing reasons. I’ve crossed the line with Maguire.”
United’s leadership structure is a crucial part of their strategy to rebound from last season’s disappointing performance. Amorim has taken steps to improve not only the squad’s talent but also its cohesion. He believes that the new leadership group will foster a more organized environment both on and off the pitch. “I know they’re not kids and I don’t treat the players like kids. But I think these small rules can help a group to be strong,” he explained.
The club has made notable signings this summer, including Cunha and Mbeumo, as they strive to address their scoring difficulties from the previous season. The pursuit of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig further illustrates United’s ambition to rejuvenate the squad.
Looking ahead, Manchester United has shown signs of improvement during pre-season. They drew 0-0 with Leeds United, before securing victories over West Ham (2-1) and Bournemouth (4-1) in the Premier League Summer Series. Their latest match ended in a 2-2 draw against Everton, setting the stage for their upcoming fixtures, including a clash against Fiorentina at Old Trafford this Saturday. Following that, they will open their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on August 17 at the Theatre of Dreams.
As Manchester United prepares for a critical season, the effectiveness of Amorim’s leadership group and the ability to respond to Keane’s critiques will be vital in determining the team’s success on the pitch.
