St Pat’s Athletic Advances with Dominant Win in Lithuania
St Patrick’s Athletic delivered a commanding performance in Lithuania, defeating Hegelmann 2-0 in the second leg of their European campaign. With goals from Mason Melia and Kian Leavy, the Irish side showcased their tactical and technical superiority, aiming for a resurgence in their season after a challenging stretch in the Premier Division.
This match marked a significant turnaround for St Pat’s, who had struggled to find the back of the net in recent games. Both players were instrumental in leading the team to success, demonstrating skill and precision that left their opponents reeling. Stephen Kenny, the team’s manager, expressed confidence in his players’ abilities to turn their fortunes around, and this performance validated that belief.
St Pat’s opened the scoring just six minutes into the match, setting the tone for a dominant display. Leavy, perhaps eager to prove his worth after being the only change to the starting lineup, was dynamic throughout the first half. He skillfully navigated through the Hegelmann defense, creating opportunities and ultimately assisting the opening goal. He cut in from the right wing and found Jason McClelland, whose shot rebounded off the goalkeeper and into the path of Melia, who finished from close range.
The early goal helped ease any nerves and allowed St Pat’s to settle into their rhythm. Leavy’s confidence was palpable as he consistently challenged the Hegelmann defense. By the end of the first half, St Pat’s had established complete control over the game, a promising sign as they advance further in their European journey.
A second goal came just after the hour mark, further illustrating the gap in class between the two teams. Melia, only 17 years old, dropped into the midfield to receive a pass under pressure. He expertly evaded defenders and sprinted into the opponent’s half before playing a precise ball to Leavy. With a deft touch, Leavy turned and unleashed a powerful shot into the roof of the net, sealing the victory.
The defensive solidity of St Pat’s was equally impressive, as they maintained a clean sheet throughout the match. There were moments when Hegelmann threatened to score, including a penalty appeal when Melia was fouled in the box, but the visitors managed the game effectively.
As a result of their success, St Pat’s secured at least €700,000 in revenue, with their next opponent awaiting confirmation between Partizani from Albania and Nõmme Kalju FC from Estonia. With their European campaign now progressing to the second qualifying round, the team appears to have rediscovered their scoring touch just in time.
With Chris Forrester making his 25th European appearance as a substitute, he now holds the record for the most European appearances for St Pat’s. The team is optimistic that this victory marks the beginning of a strong resurgence, as they look to continue their successful run in the competition.
