Thomas Frank Praises Spurs Despite Super Cup Heartbreak Against PSG

Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, Thomas Frank, expressed pride in his team’s performance despite their recent defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Super Cup. The match, held under the intense heat of Italy, ended in a penalty shootout loss after a dramatic equalizer. Frank emphasized that the experience demonstrated Spurs’ capability to compete at the highest level.
Reflecting on the match, Frank stated, “We played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time.” He noted that a crucial goal from PSG in the 85th minute shifted the momentum, but maintained that there were numerous positive takeaways from the match. “There’s a lot to be happy with; it’s a flip of a coin when you go into a penalty shootout,” he added.
Positive Takeaways from the Match
In what Frank described as a “perfect” performance for the majority of the match, Tottenham’s resilience was highlighted by Goncalo Ramos, who scored the equalizer following a strike from Lee Kang-in for PSG. Frank believes that their display sets a benchmark for future matches, establishing them as formidable opponents.
“We showed we can be tactical and pragmatic because we needed to be against a team like PSG,” he explained. “In one game, we showed we can play against almost any team. I’m not in doubt we can do that. That’s a positive we can take away.”
Transfer Plans and Squad Development
Looking ahead, Frank acknowledged the need to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes. “I’d like to strengthen the squad, no doubt about that. We will work very hard to do that,” he remarked. Despite being generally content with the current roster, he indicated a desire for further additions.
Tottenham has already signed six new players ahead of the upcoming season, with Mohammed Kudus‘s move from West Ham being the highlight. Additionally, Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso have had their loans made permanent, while Joao Palhinha has joined on a temporary deal from Bayern Munich. Young defenders Luka Vuskovic and Kota Takai have also been recruited.
Rumors suggest that Tottenham is in discussions with Manchester City regarding a potential signing of Savinho.
With just a few days remaining until their Premier League debut, Tottenham will face newly-promoted Burnley in North London on Saturday, August 12, 2023. This match will be followed by a high-stakes encounter against Manchester City the following weekend, setting the stage for an exciting start to the season.
