Trainer Bill Turner, 78, Passes Away After Fall in Somerset
Bill Turner, a revered figure in the horse racing community, has passed away at the age of 78 following a serious fall earlier this week. The accident occurred on March 11, 2024, and resulted in a fractured skull, leaving the trainer in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries on March 14, as confirmed by his daughter, Kathy Turner.
Turner, who was based in Sigwells, Somerset, made a significant mark in racing, particularly known for his connection to the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster. He achieved remarkable success in this prestigious event, winning it six times, and his last victory came with Mick’s Yer Man in 2013. This particular win holds special significance for the Turner family, as it was celebrated alongside his grandson, Ryan While.
Kathy Turner spoke to Sky Sports Racing shortly after her father’s death, sharing heartfelt reflections about his life and legacy. “Dad passed away about an hour and a half ago,” she said. “We got the call in the lorry; I’d made the decision to come here. The horse, Red Snapper, was to run in dad’s name in his honour. Whatever had happened, he would have wanted that.”
The emotional impact of her father’s passing was evident in her words. Kathy described the overwhelming support from the racing community, stating, “The support from everyone in racing has been absolutely outstanding. I’ve tried to reply to as many people as I could, but I am so sorry if I haven’t replied to you or someone else. The love that man had was absolute.”
She continued to emphasize her father’s role in their lives and the lives of many others. “He wasn’t just my dad and my sister’s dad and Ryan’s grandfather; he was everyone’s dad. The people he has helped in their careers saw him as a dad,” she added.
Kathy also recalled the unfortunate circumstances surrounding her father’s injury. “He would have preferred to have been going flat out up the gallops, but unfortunately, it was a freak accident. I still can’t get round that this injury has done this to him, as I’ve pulled him out from such serious injuries on the gallops. Only last Sunday, he was re-felting my sister’s salon roof.”
Bill Turner’s contributions to the sport will be remembered by many, reflecting not only his skill as a trainer but also his profound impact on those around him. The racing community mourns the loss of a dedicated professional who left an indelible mark on the sport.
