Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick Rally for Sons at SuperCupNI Final
Former Manchester United stars Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick are enjoying a family-oriented break in Northern Ireland this week, as they support their sons in the prestigious SuperCupNI tournament. The event, which draws young football talent from around the world, is taking place in Coleraine, just two weeks after the conclusion of the Open Championship in Portrush.
Rooney, who has been taking in the scenic views of the Causeway Coast, is particularly enthusiastic about his son Kai, who plays as a striker for Manchester United’s youth team. The Red Devils are set to face Southampton in the final, scheduled for an 8:00 PM kick-off at the Coleraine Showgrounds. Rooney, who participated in the tournament himself back in 2000 with Everton, expressed his hopes that Kai can secure a winners’ medal, an achievement that eluded him during his own youth career.
In a reflective moment earlier this week, Rooney shared memories of his own tournament experiences. “Some of the greatest memories I’ve had…is going away in tournaments,” he recalled. He reflected fondly on the times he traveled to places like Dallas, Holland, and Switzerland, emphasizing the camaraderie built with teammates during those formative years. Rooney noted, “As a young lad, you don’t want to be around your parents when you’re 15 – you want to be with your teammates, going out and doing different things.”
While supporting his son, Rooney has also engaged with fans, capturing moments with them at local attractions, including an amusement outlet in Portrush. His presence has not gone unnoticed, with many locals eager to take photographs alongside the football legend.
Joining Rooney on the sidelines is fellow Manchester United icon Michael Carrick, whose son Jacey is also competing for United at the SuperCupNI. The camaraderie between the two former players has added an extra layer of excitement to the tournament, as they both cheer on their aspiring young footballers.
The SuperCupNI remains a highly regarded event in youth football, featuring teams from various countries. As the action unfolds in Coleraine, the legacy of these football legends continues to inspire the next generation of players, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and shared experiences in sport. With the final match drawing near, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation, as families and supporters gather to witness the emerging talent on display.
