Wigan Warriors Set for Epic Grand Final Clash Against St Helens
Wigan Warriors will face their fierce rivals St Helens in the Women’s Super League Grand Final on October 5, 2023, at the Brick Community Stadium. The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports starting at 17:00. This showdown marks a rematch of the Women’s Challenge Cup final held at Wembley earlier this year, where Wigan triumphed with a decisive 42-6 victory, securing their first trophy of the season.
The Grand Final will take place at the Brick Community Stadium after Wigan won the League Leaders’ Shield, establishing themselves as the highest-ranked finalist. The Warriors advanced to the final by dominating Leeds Rhinos with a score of 38-0 in front of a record crowd of 2,108 fans for a women’s Super League match.
Wigan’s head coach, Denis Betts, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “I love a zero. The tries were really good but I thought defensively we had to work hard because we tried to overplay a couple of times. That’s in our nature at the moment. We want to play with the ball.” Betts emphasized the team’s growth, noting their enjoyment of playing defensively, calling it “gold dust.”
Full-back Grace Banks, who celebrated her 20th birthday on the day of the semi-final, shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming final. “It’s a privilege and makes my birthday even more special,” she said. Banks highlighted the team’s strong performance, particularly praising teammate Ruby Hunter for her exceptional contributions in recent games.
St Helens, on the other hand, secured their spot in the Grand Final by narrowly defeating reigning champions York Valkyrie with a score of 12-8 at the Totally Wicked Stadium. Player-of-the-match Katie Mottershead commended her teammates for their resilience, stating, “It was a massive team effort, especially digging deep there in the end.”
As the two teams prepare for this anticipated clash, both Wigan and St Helens will aim to seize the opportunity for glory in what promises to be an exhilarating conclusion to the season. With the stakes high and rivalries intense, fans can expect a thrilling encounter at the Brick Community Stadium.
