BREAKING: Katelyn Cummins, a 20-year-old apprentice electrician from Ballyouskill, has just been crowned the 2025 Rose of Tralee, marking a significant moment in the festival’s history. This landmark event took place on August 21, 2025, as Cummins emerged victorious among 31 contestants, impressing judges with her charisma and unique story.
Cummins, who works at Alpha Drives in Portlaoise, specializes in making control panels for motors and is currently in the third phase of her electrical apprenticeship. Her triumph is not only a personal victory but also a groundbreaking milestone for women in traditionally male-dominated fields. She remarked, “We don’t need to follow tradition by going to college or anything like that,” emphasizing her belief in breaking gender norms.
Growing up on a dairy farm, Cummins developed a love for the outdoors and describes herself as “outgoing and adventurous.” She also serves as the chairperson of the North Kilkenny Macra club and has won two county camogie finals, showcasing her multifaceted talents.
In her emotional acceptance speech, Cummins thanked her parents and her fellow contestants, highlighting the friendships forged during the festival. She stated, “I think the Rose of Tralee has been an amazing festival for the past 10 days for me and I made friends for life.” This sentiment underscores the festival’s role in promoting camaraderie and community among participants, despite past criticisms labeling it as outdated.
During an interview with presenter Kathryn Thomas, Cummins expressed her passion for her profession, stating, “I absolutely love it when people ask me about being an apprentice electrician.” She also encouraged young girls to embrace their ambitions, saying, “Be confident in yourself and believe in yourself, and know that I’m going to be amazing in the future.”
Cummins hinted at future aspirations, suggesting she may one day start her own electrical business, “powered” by women, further emphasizing her commitment to inspiring others in her field.
This crowning moment not only celebrates Cummins’ achievements but also serves as a powerful reminder of the changing landscape for women in various professions. The Rose of Tralee festival is evolving, focusing on empowerment and community rather than outdated stereotypes.
As news of her victory spreads, Katelyn Cummins stands as a beacon of inspiration, proving that women can thrive in any industry. Congratulations to Katelyn Cummins, the new Rose of Tralee! This is a developing story, and further updates will follow.
