Asthma Society Urges Action as 1 in 4 Patients Skip Medication

UPDATE: New reports reveal that 1 in 4 individuals with asthma have gone without essential medication due to rising costs. A critical survey by the Asthma Society highlights this urgent issue just ahead of Budget Day on July 30, 2025.
The findings indicate that 25% of asthma patients reported falling into arrears at least once in the past year, raising alarms about the accessibility of vital healthcare resources. In Donegal, where approximately 16,000 residents are affected by asthma, this translates to around 4,000 people struggling to afford their medications if local trends mirror national statistics.
Eilís Ní Chaithnía, CEO of the Asthma Society, expressed deep concern, stating, “People shouldn’t have to choose between medication and rent.” The organization is calling for an urgent adjustment to the Drugs Payment Scheme, advocating for a reduction of €8 per month to alleviate the financial burden on patients.
This pressing situation underscores a broader public health crisis, affecting thousands who rely on medication to manage their condition. As healthcare costs escalate, the Asthma Society emphasizes that no one should have to sacrifice their health due to financial constraints.
The implications of this survey are profound, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention and policy changes to support those in need. Advocates are demanding immediate action to ensure that essential medications are accessible to all, regardless of income.
As the situation develops, stakeholders are watching closely for government responses to these alarming statistics. The Asthma Society plans to amplify its advocacy efforts, urging policymakers to prioritize healthcare affordability in upcoming budget discussions.
Stay tuned for further updates on this critical issue as it unfolds.
