Catherine Connolly Sworn In as Ireland’s 10th President Amid Galway Pride
UPDATE: Catherine Connolly has just been sworn in as Ireland’s 10th President, marking a historic moment for the nation and an emotional celebration for her hometown of Galway. The inauguration took place on Tuesday at Dublin Castle, where Connolly pledged to be a President for all the people, underscoring her commitment to inclusivity and social justice.
In her inaugural address, Connolly expressed deep concern for the 165 million individuals forcibly displaced by war, famine, and climate change, calling these issues an “existential threat.” “I stand before you humbly and proudly,” she declared, her voice filled with emotion, as she acknowledged the overwhelming support from her family—one of 14 children—and friends who filled St Patrick’s Hall.
Connolly’s speech emphasized the importance of fostering open dialogue across Ireland and the global Irish Diaspora. She vowed to uphold the Irish language as a vital part of her presidency, reflecting her dedication to cultural heritage.
“I have never believed more in the spirit of this country,” Connolly stated, highlighting the resilience and dignity of the Irish people. She promised to work towards a nation where “everyone is valued and diversity is cherished,” igniting a sense of hope and determination among citizens.
The ceremony featured traditional Galway elements, including a poignant performance by Uilleann Piper Eugene Lambe, who played a haunting rendition of “Galway Bay,” and Conamara sean-nós singer Síle Denvir, who captivated the audience with “Ár nAthair.” These artistic tributes underscored the rich cultural heritage Connolly aims to promote during her presidency.
Prominent figures in attendance included former Presidents Michael D Higgins, Mary McAleese, and Mary Robinson, all of whom have faced unique challenges in their political journeys. Connolly expressed gratitude to her predecessors, acknowledging the weight of the responsibility she now carries.
The event was attended by key political leaders, including Cllr Mike Cubbard, the Mayor of Galway City, who took a prime spot alongside First Minister of Northern Ireland Michelle O’Neill and Lord Mayor of Dublin Cllr Ray McAdam. Their presence highlighted the unity and solidarity among Ireland’s leaders as they welcome Connolly’s presidency.
As Ireland embraces this new chapter, all eyes are on President Connolly, who is expected to navigate pressing challenges while fostering a spirit of inclusiveness and hope. With her strong ties to Galway and a clear vision for the future, Connolly’s presidency promises to resonate with citizens both at home and abroad.
Stay tuned for further updates on President Connolly’s initiatives and the impact of her leadership on Ireland’s future.
