Christmas Tree Prices Hold Steady Despite Inflation Pressures

UPDATE: Christmas tree prices are largely stable this year, defying inflation trends impacting other sectors. With the holiday season approaching, sellers across Ireland report minimal price changes, providing good news for families eager to celebrate.

Despite rising costs in the economy, many retailers are maintaining their prices for real Christmas trees, with only slight increases reported. A survey by The Journal indicates that most sellers are holding prices steady, while some tree sizes may see a rise of just €5.

Joe Flynn, chair of the Irish Christmas Tree Growers Association, confirmed, “The prices in the garden centres have not raised significantly this year – maybe a fiver.” He noted that while supply remains adequate now, a decline in growers could lead to higher prices in the coming years.

Among the notable changes, Lidl has adjusted its pricing structure. Last year, customers paid €24.99 for real Christmas trees, but this season, only customers using the Lidl Plus loyalty app will get that price. Others will face a new price of €29.99, valid until Christmas Eve.

Local retailers are also adjusting prices. Cork Christmas Trees, a major seller based in Cork, has announced a €5 increase after eight years of price stability. Fintan Riordan, a grower, stated, “We had to do it. Costs kept going up every year, and I felt I had no choice.”

In the Galway area, Galway Christmas Trees will also charge €5 more for larger trees, attributing the rise to increased machinery hire costs. However, some sellers remain committed to keeping prices unchanged. Customers at Wades Christmas Tree Farm in Co. Dublin reported paying €60 this year, the same as last.

Many families are relieved that prices for popular tree sizes remain consistent. For instance, prices for 7-9 foot trees at Limerick Christmas Trees are unchanged, ranging from €50-70 this year.

Amid these developments, sellers urge customers to care for real trees properly. Keeping trees well-watered and away from heat sources is essential for safety and longevity. A fresh cut at the base of the trunk helps the tree absorb water more effectively.

As the holiday season draws near, shoppers are encouraged to act quickly to secure their trees while prices remain stable. With tighter supply expected in the future due to a decline in growers, now may be the best time to purchase a real Christmas tree.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Christmas season progresses.
