Claire Byrne, the prominent presenter of RTE Radio 1’s flagship “Today” programme, will leave RTE later this year to rejoin Newstalk. Byrne’s move is part of a broader scheduling reorganization at Newstalk, where she is set to host a new weekday program from 9:00 to 12:00 starting in early 2026.

Byrne expressed her excitement about this transition, calling it a “significant milestone” in her career. She stated, “I’m thrilled to be doing it with the vibrant team and listeners at Newstalk as they continue to thrive and cement their position in the Irish media landscape.” She also acknowledged the impact of her predecessor, Pat Kenny, stating, “It’s a particular honour for me to take up the reins from Pat Kenny, a broadcaster whose career, skill and passion for the job is an inspiration to all of us.”

The departure of Byrne has prompted RTE’s Director of Audio, Patricia Monahan, to reflect on her contributions to the station. Monahan mentioned, “Claire has made the ‘Today’ seat her own, and her contribution to public service broadcasting across her years in RTE has been outstanding. We wish her the very best, and thank her for her dedication to the audiences in Ireland and around the world over many years.”

David McCullagh Takes Over “Today” Programme

Byrne will be succeeded on RTE Radio’s “Today” programme by David McCullagh, a seasoned journalist and current presenter of RTE’s Six One News and the “Behind the Story” podcast. The new show, titled “Today with David McCullagh,” is scheduled to launch on November 3, 2023. McCullagh will maintain his role with RTE’s Six One News until the end of October.

RTE has conveyed confidence that McCullagh will uphold the program’s reputation for sharp, accessible journalism. The “Today” programme will continue to feature in-depth interviews with notable figures from various sectors, including politics, sports, and culture, while providing trusted reporting on significant news developments.

In his acceptance of the new role, McCullagh expressed enthusiasm, stating, “I’m delighted to be joining the Today programme and am excited about the challenge ahead. I’m really looking forward to working with the team to build on the programme’s strong record of providing first-class coverage and analysis of the stories that are important to our audience.”

McCullagh’s Impressive Background

David McCullagh, a Dubliner, holds a PhD in Politics from University College Dublin and has a distinguished career in journalism. He began his tenure at RTE in 1993 after working at the Evening Press. His accolades include a National Media Award in 1999 for his television documentary, “Declaring the Republic.”

Over the years, McCullagh has served in various roles, including RTE News Political Correspondent and presenter of the critical current affairs program, “Prime Time.” His experience extends to producing and presenting programs that delve into significant political events and historical narratives. He has authored six books, further establishing his expertise in the field.

Monahan praised McCullagh’s qualifications for the role, highlighting his “unparalleled grasp of the political scene at home and abroad” as well as his engaging interviewing style. She noted that he would bring both entertainment and informative content to listeners, ensuring the “Today” programme continues to address serious stories while also providing lighter segments.

As the changes take effect, both Byrne and McCullagh look poised to make their marks in their respective new roles, shaping the future of Irish radio.
