Community in Shock After Family of Three Found Dead in Louth

A rural community in County Louth is grappling with profound grief following the discovery of three family members dead in their home on September 28, 2025. Gardaí found the bodies of Louise Doherty O’Connor, her partner Mark O’Connor, and their 27-year-old son Evan O’Connor in Drumgowna, a quiet area located between Louth village and Tallanstown, near the border with Monaghan. The police were called to the residence just before 10:00 AM to investigate a reported stabbing.
A man has been arrested near the scene and remains in custody, with reports indicating that medical assistance was sought for the suspect. The local area is characterized by its rural nature, with few residents and a serene atmosphere that heightened the shock of the tragic events.
Local Fianna Fáil councillor John Sheridan described the community as “really, really, really quiet,” emphasizing that in such close-knit environments, residents rally around each other in times of crisis. He noted that the “very remote and rural” nature of the area makes the incident even more distressing. Witnesses reported hearing sirens from ambulances and Garda vehicles, indicating that “something very serious had happened.”
Community Response and Support
The O’Connor family was well-known and respected in the local community, particularly for their involvement in sports and charitable activities. Mark O’Connor, aged 55, served as a regional manager for the National Advocacy Service, which provides support for individuals with disabilities. Louise, 56, was a qualified nurse who also taught English to Ukrainian refugees and volunteered at pet rescue centers. Their son, Evan, had attended Drogheda ABACAS School, specializing in autism education, and was recognized for his contributions to the community.
In light of the tragedy, Sheridan urged the public to refrain from speculating about the circumstances surrounding the deaths. He stated, “People need to think before they send stuff to family WhatsApp groups,” urging caution until the full facts are established by authorities.
Local Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchu echoed this sentiment, expressing his disbelief and sorrow over the incident. “I don’t have words, because there’s only so many times you can say ‘shocking,’” he remarked. He noted that the community had been engaged in discussions about local events, completely unprepared for the devastating news they received.
Encouraging Community Support
Local Fine Gael councillor Rachel Kerley, who lives approximately four kilometers from the scene, described the incident as a “complete tragedy.” She remarked on the “overwhelming shock” felt throughout the area, urging residents affected by the tragedy to reach out for support. “It’s a small rural area, we’re all quite close together, we all look out for each other,” Kerley emphasized, highlighting the importance of community solidarity during this difficult time.
As the investigation continues, the community of Drumgowna is left to mourn the loss of three beloved members while supporting one another through this unprecedented tragedy.
