Community Mourns Sudden Loss of Johnny Murray, 38, Father of Two
A community in County Fermanagh is grappling with profound grief following the untimely death of Johnny Murray, aged 38. Murray, who lived in Derryree Wood on the outskirts of Lisnaskea, fell ill on the morning of March 5, 2023, near the popular Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk and tragically passed away. He leaves behind his wife, Clare, and their two young children, Dara and Una.
This loss follows closely on the heels of the death of former Roslea GAA player Ciaran Cassidy, intensifying the sorrow in the border village. Murray was widely recognized for his kindness and community spirit, having recently participated in a charity cycling event that raised over £6,800 for MacMillan Cancer Support. The journey involved a challenging 106-kilometre circuit around Lough Ness in Scotland, dedicated to family members lost to cancer.
Tributes and Community Response
Johnny Murray’s contributions to the community extended beyond fundraising. He was also a dedicated member of St Colmcille’s GAA club while living abroad and earned the title of men’s player of the year in 2016. His sudden passing has drawn an outpouring of tributes, reflecting the deep impact he had on those around him.
A death notice on Funeral Times poignantly acknowledged his legacy: “May Johnny’s gentle soul rest in eternal peace,” it read. Murray is survived by his father, Michael, his siblings—Michelle and Martin—and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also remembered by his in-laws, Jim and Marie Martin, and siblings-in-law, Kieran Martin and Laura Mohan.
The Roslea Wellness Centre expressed condolences, stating, “On behalf of Lorraine and I, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the Murray and Martin families on the sudden passing of Johnny. An absolute gentleman who always had a smile and a chat for everyone. Our hearts are breaking for you all.”
A Grieving Community
Scores of heartfelt messages have flooded social media, illustrating the widespread affection and respect for Murray. One tribute captured the essence of his character: “Absolutely heartbreaking. What a gentleman, who always had a smile and a chat for everyone.”
The community’s sense of loss is palpable as they come together to support each other during this difficult time. The legacy of Johnny Murray, marked by his kindness and community involvement, will undoubtedly be cherished by his family and friends for years to come.
As the village mourns, thoughts and prayers are extended to the Murray family, who are navigating this painful chapter with the support of their loved ones and community members.
