Cork’s Mairéad Tyers Shines in New Roles Amid London Move

URGENT UPDATE: Cork-born actor Mairéad Tyers is making waves in the entertainment industry with her dynamic performances in two highly anticipated series, Obituary and The Walsh Sisters. Just announced, Tyers’ portrayal of the “unapologetic” Vivienne Birch will feature prominently in the upcoming season of Obituary, set to air soon.
Tyers, 26, reflects on her journey from her hometown of Ballinhassig, Co Cork, to the bustling streets of London, where she moved at 18 years old to attend the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). In a recent interview, she shared an inspiring story about her experience with director Ridley Scott during auditions for Gladiator II, where Scott encouraged fellow actor Paul Mescal to set aside nerves and focus on the performance. “You have to try your best to put those feelings aside and do the job,” Tyers emphasizes, highlighting the pressures of the acting world.
The buzz around Tyers is palpable, especially as she gains recognition for her role as Helen Walsh in the six-part drama The Walsh Sisters, adapted from the novels of acclaimed author Marian Keyes. “I was instantly drawn to these roles,” Tyers admits, expressing her commitment to characters that resonate deeply with her. Her previous BAFTA-nominated performance in the Disney+ series Extraordinary has set a high bar for her career.
Living in London has not been without its challenges. Tyers candidly discusses her struggles during an 18-month dry spell when work was scarce. “I hate not being busy,” she states, revealing her need to stay active, whether through voiceover work or helping neighbors. This adaptability has been crucial in maintaining her momentum in a notoriously unpredictable industry.
As Tyers gears up for the launch of The Walsh Sisters, she notes that the series introduces a fresh take on Keyes’ characters, stating, “We’ve changed her… she’s not the Helen that I imagined.” This modern interpretation aims to attract new audiences, allowing them to explore Keyes’s extensive back catalogue.
Despite her successes, Tyers remains humble, acknowledging the importance of collaboration. She praises her co-stars, including Siobhán Cullen, calling her a “stellar actor” and expressing excitement over working alongside talented directors like Gary Shore and Rachel Curran.
With a growing list of aspirations, Tyers dreams of writing her own script in the next five years. “I’m slowly becoming more confident in my ideas,” she reveals, while recognizing her struggle with perfectionism. “Perfectionism doesn’t belong in art,” she reflects, aspiring to overcome this barrier to unleash her full creative potential.
As Tyers continues to captivate audiences with her performances, the countdown to the release of Obituary and The Walsh Sisters is set to create significant buzz in the industry. Fans eagerly await her next steps, making her an actor to watch closely in the coming months.
