Councillor Threatens to Use Angle Grinder on Locked Walkway

URGENT UPDATE: Tensions rise in Stranorlar as Councillor Martin Harley threatens to use an angle grinder on a locked gate obstructing the scenic Drumboe Woods walkway. The walkway, crucial for connecting the new Finn Valley College with the town, has been closed for over 16 years due to health and safety concerns raised by Donegal ETB.

During this week’s monthly meeting of the Lifford-Stanorlar Municipal District, Cllr Gary Doherty highlighted the ongoing frustration surrounding the path’s access. Council official Kathleen Browne indicated that access could be restored once construction at the school wraps up in November 2023.

However, Cllr Harley, also a member of the Donegal ETB board, voiced his dissatisfaction, stating, “The responsibility of opening the route is on the ETB, but there’s also an onus on us (councillors) too as it’s been closed for 16 years. It has to be taken down now or, if not, I’ll take an angle grinder up there myself and take the gates off.” His commitment to public access comes as local sentiments grow more urgent.

Another councillor, Cllr Patrick McGowan, shared past incidents, recalling that a local man previously attempted to cut through the gate lock, only for it to be replaced by the former school principal. “I blame the ETB for this as the council has bent over backwards. The ETB is actually in breach of their planning permission by not having this pathway opened,” he stated, expressing hope that the walkway will finally reopen by year’s end.

Ciara Condon, the council’s planning officer, confirmed that the access issue was discussed with the ETB prior to granting development permission. She noted that the right of way is clearly marked in the local area plan, emphasizing the long-standing need for resolution.

With community members eager for the walkway’s reopening, Cllr Harley‘s dramatic declaration underscores the urgency of the situation. As the deadline for construction approaches, all eyes will be on the ETB to ensure the path is accessible once again.
